Hi,
Can anyone tell me of any success they have had with any weight loss medication?? The SSRIs have really piled on the pounds on me over the last 12 months, and I want to try some weight loss medication to help me lose weight.
However I don't know which to try (either-over- the-counter or prescription) and I don't know whether they are safe to take with my current 40mg Prozac??
Any suggestions??
Thanks.

Talk with your doctor about it.
Now, it's very likely your doctor will come back with "diet and exercise" first, and those are good things, but after you hear all that and agree that those are good things -- then you can start talking about chemical mitigation of the SSRI induced weight gain. (In other words, the faster you get through the diet and exercise talk, the quicker you get to the real talk. At least in my experience.)
(Oh, and at least now the SSRI weight gain has shown up in studies: when I was first prescribed Paxil, I was actively anorexic and worked out an average of 2 1/2 hours per day. With no change to any of that -- and with my mood still quite depressed because the anti-depressant part hadn't yet kicked in -- my weight began to climb. Yeah, imagine how distressing that was. The doctor, though, said that it must be diet and exercise changes, because all the studies had shown that SSRIs didn't cause weight gain -- and were even linked to weight loss! At least now, with the newer research about it, you'll have a much easier time convincing the doctor that it's not because you're feeling so much better that you're having an entire cheesecake for dessert daily!)
Good luck!

Hi. I was on Paxil a couple years and even with typical age-factor weight gain, I went up about 20 pounds. I did exercise too and really don't eat a lot of junk food. Later, I noticed to that I was laying around more; perhaps a masking of depression Paxil didn't help with.
I told my doc I couldn't take the weight gain or laziness and she switched me to Effexor. I am only on 37.5 in am and pm, but I did get some giddy-up back. I didn't 'miraculously' drop any weight, although I did see in some other forums other folks felt that it did help.
Although I get the 'you look fine', I know I could look better and will still try to get it off. If I was eating a pint of ice cream and brownies everyday, then I'd feel validated for the gain, but I don't eat like that, so having it just pile on without even 'enjoying' it is frustrating. BUT, having less angst IS worth it.
Good luck - and let (us) know how it goes!

> Thanks.Well, if there is any question about you being bipolar, you could beg for some topamax or zonegran. Lots of people lose their appetites on those drugs and consequently lose weight.
I wouldn't do any heart racing diet pills because of the anxiety, but I don't know about mixing those things with prozac.Good Luck,
Diane
