What OTC and RX meds have you taken for insomnia

Posted by Colleen D. on June 28, 2004, at 20:41:25

as far as the OTC ones go, is Benadryl (diphenhydramine HCL) more suitable than Unisom (doxylamine succinate) for frequent use with ADs??? I'm taking 150mg Effexor XR daily and I'm still waiting for a call from my doc re: getting a prescription. Apparently she has been out of the office and the receptionist didn't tell me that when I called last Friday. I want to have some ideas on what I might ask for when I talk to her (hopefully tomorrow.)

Thanks so much for your help.

Unisom works better with me, but as a wide knowlage, we all are diffrent.

Ambien is the standard treatment for now, unless some more blockbuster hit smashes in, from good old' Eli Lilly Pharm. Company, they come out with stuff left and right.

Of course, you have heard of Valium, its been around long, it doesnt really cause much problems that i know of, unlike Xanax, which gives me the chills.

There's Ativan, it's mainly more for anxiety, but you may ask your doctor.

There's alot of other prescription hypnotics..... but im too tired to list them all, but those are reserved for failure to standard treatment.

Post if your have any more questions before asking your doctor.

Hi Colleen -
I've been taking Lex and had horrible insomnia the first few months. I took anything OTC that had sleepy properties: Benadryl, Midol PMS, Tylenol PM. Melatonin worked great for me too. I don't think there is any danger in it mixing with ADs. My doctor thought I could go on and on just taking Benadryl.
Good luck!
