tired of all meds!!! rant.....

Posted by thinkfast on June 28, 2004, at 5:43:28

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I am tired of paying out the a** for all these medications that simply do not work. The things that actually work are denied of course. This almost makes me want to go back to tokin refer every day. It would cost about as much as all of these other drugs. Of course, that isn't the best way to live life either. So, what's next? Some other drug that will work for a month and crap out on me? Get used to one med...quits..working..go through withdrawl...get another...go through the new side effects...Jesus! SSRI's make me too nervous, remeron makes me a zombie, effexor works a little but don't like the higher doses, none of them help with anxiety...Just started wellbutrin since I was denied Ritilin, which actually works the best out of everything I've tried w or w/out doc's permission...ahhh!!! sorry to go on and on but I had to get it out...Thanx for listening..Any suggestions?

paxil/paxil CR 20-25mg--extreme insomnia & nervousness
Trazodone--nothing
Remeron 15/30/45/60mg---zombie land for 2 years
Neurontin 300mg---doesn't do much at all..helps sleep
Risperdal 1mg--zombie..helps with sleep
Effexor--helps a little with social anxiety & slows thinking a little--helps with remeron sedation
And ritilin, but not from Pdoc

In my opinion, the Remeron and Ritilin would be a perfect combo. Remeron as the AD and for sleep, and the Ritilin to help with social anxiety and thinking. And get this, this Dr. says she does no Rx those because it's a controlled substance. And she doesn't hand this out to off the wall kids? Yeah right...Sooo confusing!

One that might be worth trying is nortriptyline; this is a moderately sedating norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor that will help with sleep. It is an inexpensive tricyclic AD that has been around for about 40 years. I actually found the tricyclics to be better for my social phobia than the SSRIs. Nortriptyline is also relatively effective for anxiety in general.

My favorite tricyclic was desipramine, as this was much more activating than nortriptyline. However, it did have more of a tendency to increase my overall anxiety levels, while still relatively effective for my social phobia. It caused me moderate insomnia that became less of a problem as time went on. It is also inexpensive, but not quite as ridiculously cheap as nortriptyline.

The MAOIs are very good for social anxiety, particularly Nardil, and are extremely effective antidepressants. Parnate is the more activating of the two and has fewer overall side effects. Both of these have the potential to cause severe insomnia. Of course, they both have dietary and OTC drug restrictions, so they are more of a nuisance to take than a typical AD.

Have you tried Benadryl (the plain allergy only version) for sleep? I use 50 mg every other night for my MAOI insomnia and find it works reasonably well. The other night I use Halcion, a high powered benzodiazepine sleep aid that it sounds like you might have trouble getting a prescription from your doctor for; although, it is only Schedule IV, while Ritalin is Schedule II. Ask her about Ambien--if she is unwilling to prescribe this fairly innocuous Schedule IV sleep aid, you might want to try finding someone else if this is possible.

The doc said to discontinue Effexor since I was starting the Wellbutrin, but after last night I think continuing the effexor is necessary. Going with both on my own terms and see what happens. Maybe I'll get enough NE from the Effexor, Well. And Rem combo to come somewhat closer to the fx of ritilin. If it's the best I can do, then so be it! Thanx 4 the info! Peace
