Lexapro Withdrawl..when does it stop?

Posted by goober on June 17, 2004, at 14:51:31

I have been on lexapro 10 mg for 4 months and was told I could ween off of it. My dr. told me to take one pill every other day for 2 weeks and then stop...I had the last pill last wed. and by saturday I started feeling extreme dizzinnes, headaches, sweating, and brain zaps. I also noticed that ever since on the pill I had experinced left-sided "zapping" headaches. I was sent to a neurologist and told it had nothing to do with the lexapro...but I think it may.. Can anyone tell me how long there experinces of withdrawl have been for them and if they have had this one sided headaches??
Thanks :)

I was on Lexipro 10mg for a year or so and got off it about a month ago and still experiencing withdrawal a bit. I don't have the brain zaps anymore, thank god but the diziness, fatigue and just plain memory loss. My pdoc put me on 10mg prozac seems to be helping a little. Hope this helps and good luck.

I am new here - I am wondering what people mean when they say "pdoc" and "brain zaps". I have been on Lexapro for 10 days and just curious. This makes me scared to come off of it because I already have to deal with vertigo and dizzyness would sky rocket my anxiety if I got off. Wondering if I should stop taking it now....captain

Captain-
Pdoc means Psychiatrist. Brain zaps are like headaches that come on quickly or like when you get electric through your system. kind of like when you get the shivers all of a sudden really bad. it's different for everyone, but that's been my experience.
you might want to talk to your doc before making any decisions about changing your medication. Just a suggestion. Good luck with everything.

I am no doctor, but seems to me that your weening off the Lexapro was to fast. I would suggest reducing the dose by 25% and stay at that dose for two weeks and so on.
Unfortunatelly, you can't do much know.
Good luck.

I've been off Lexapro for six months and only recently got rid of the ear-buzzing and miscellaneous aural disturbances. Maybe it was a "crossover" problem with the Prozac I was switched to, but it sure was a relief to have that constant ringing in my ears go away. I couldn't sleep, couldn't think, etc. Is it possible there is some overlap with a different med you are now on? :^\

Brain zaps are extremely common when coming off of some of the antidepressants. Although they are harmless, they can make you feel pretty bad.

I have been on Lexapro, and Celexa (an older version of Lexapro) for a few years. I take 30 mg. I used to have EXTREME anxiety and depression. But the Lexapro has relieved all of the depression and most of the anxiety. I also recently started taking Strattera which relieves most of my remaining anxiety.

Withdrawal can be tough if you do it too fast. Docs should have patients withdraw more gradually and also take Prozac during withdrawal from drugs like Lexapro and Effexor.

If you truely have depression, I think that you should stay on your Lexapro. It's a very safe and very effective drug.
