Hi to all,
I find sulpiride very effective for my anxiety and dysthemia. I have been on it for some months now. Is there anyone in this forum who takes it for months or even years? I wish to be on this med for as long as it helps me, and the dosage is fairly low, ie 150mg daily. I need an answer from experienced guys who take or took it for years. Please answer
PLS

I took up to 800 mgs. daily for a year and then about like you for another couple of years, more like 200mgs-400 mgs daily. It's being taken off the market I read, here in Europe. It's not used in USA, or so I hear. Sulpiride can make prolactin fly sky high, causing lactation even in males and other problems along that line. So get your prolactin levels tested, and keep up with it over time for changes. Aside from that it has the usual possible side effects of movement problems, etc. A low dose is bound to be better for you in that way, I imagine. As for how it worked---it was like magic sometimes for my fuddleheadedness and just really cleared my mind and made me feel fresh and light. Not zombie like, not drugged. I wish someone could make a similar med that feels as good to take. Not good as in euphoria or addictive, just sort of like I had a nice good sleep and untroubled mind, anxiety pretty low, and feeling pretty well. Hope this helps a little

Dear Ramsea,
Thank you very much for your response. Meanwhile, I will ask you Were there any movement problems while you were on it? Like akathisia, dyskinesia or do you think even Tardive dyskinesia is possible at this low dose level? 800mg is a huge dose as far as I am concerned. I hope I will never have to reach upto that. 150mg or maximum 200mg is fine for me, and I wish to be on this for as long as it helps me. You are right. Sulpiride gives me a clear head, anxiolysis without sedation energy without restlessness... and so far it is unique in all it's aspects. I wonder why Europe is going stop producing it?
Prolactin problems are never a hindrance for me, as sulpiride usually heightened my libido, may be because of the sense of well being, I acquire from it. It is definitely not euphoria. Euphoriants usually dampens sexual desires while sulpiride heightens it. So unique a molecule!!

I'm glad I helped a little. TD and other movement problems tend to go with long-term use of an AP and heavier doses, but the literature never excludes the possibility of it happening in other circumstances. Another risk is age--and being female. The elderly female is more likely to get irreversible TD. Some of us get minor symptoms of it, and anti-Parkinson drugs help alleveiate it. But even those SE drugs can also make a problem worse if taken for too long.
If your doctor is trustworthy s/he should be able to check you periodically for any signs of trouble. I didn't get any on either low or high doses, and took it for almost 3 years. It was a great med for me, as far as anxiety and all the rest. Hope you keep doing well with it. Just wish I had some on hand!!lol.

Dear Ramsea,
Sorry for this tardive response. Thank you for your input. Meanwhile, can I please ask some more questions?
Were you taking sulpiride along with any other medications or was it a monotherapy all those three years?
Secondly, were there any withdrawal problems when you stopped taking it? How did you stop it? Cold turkey or did you taper?
Thanks
PLS

Better late than never. I just hope I can help you a little bit.
Okay--to the first question, I was started on a high dose in hospital, along with a TCA, Gamamil. Thelast one was guaranteed to make me sleep, and did it ever. When I left hospital she brought the dose down slowly until I was pretty much taking 200-400 mgs. as needed. The lower you go with Sulpiride, the more it acts as an antidepressant. Sulpiride was one of the first to have activating effects built into it, which is why it can seem like it clears the head on low doses and just makes things seem okay.
2) She stopped the TCA within three months. It was done too quickly but I got over it and felt better with just the Sulpiride.
3) One day I decided to just give up the Sulpiride, I was sick of drugs and since my dose was low, what did it matter. Well, it did matter. My CNS was well-used to Sulpiride and reacted badly to its absence. I got the discontinuation flu thing--felt like death. This lasted a weekend then seemed to be over.I wonder why it's being chased away? It was such a help.
This is the end of the thread.
