Okay, I gave the Topomax a two week trial. I'm offically done. It was recommended to me by my pdoc in conjuction with my ad effexor to help offset the weight gain I continue to have while on this very effective ssri. The first week I could barely get through the day due to drowsiness, so I drank extra coffee. I became nauseated off and on and the only thing that helped was a bland snack. It was like having morning sickness! The nausea did subside, however the drowsiness did not. The second week on a higher dosage, I began to forget my student's names (I'm a teacher) and started to have intense headaches. By the end of the second week, I had not had any reduction in appetite. In fact, I had gained another 2 pounds! Oh my gosh. So yesterday, I stopped the Topomax. This morning I feel alive again. I won't have to drink a pot of coffee to wake up. What will I try next? Maybe Wellbutrin?? Any thoughts-

Provigil is expensive but you can take as needed. Wellbutrin is a daily add on.
I just started Provigil at 50mg this weekend to see how it affects me and I would be comfortable enough to take it tomorrow morning before work, but today (Sunday) I woke up about 10:00am and decided not to take it and it's no big deal. You can take it daily if you want or take it whenever you are tired. I like it.
To get insurance to cover it you have to claim to have sleep disorders like narcolepsy which I didn't want to do so I went out on a limb and bought some full price. Thirty 200mg tablets are $190.00 but the most I'll ever need is 100mg and right now I'm fine with 50mg, so even if I took 50mg daily that's a 90 day supply which is only $63.00 per month which I can justify and they cut in quarters fine.
I did notice on Walgreens website that the leaflet on this med has included new uses, "shift work disorder" and "excessive daytime sleepines", but I still don't think those reasons will fly with the insurance companies.

I felt like I was poisoned - sore throat, nausea, bad taste to name a few. So,I had severe problems with Topamax too, but I decided to take it every three days, then every other day to every day. I did that for about 2 weeks. I am on 15 mg right now and I still have a tremor, but I bet the doc will increase it. I wouldn't increase this med no faster than every 5 weeks unless it was for seizures. This drug has made PMS just about go away.

Topomax was a terrible drug for me too. I know two people on Effexor who lost weight when they put their minds to it. It can be done. You don't have to take awful meds with severe side effects that won't help you lose the weight. Cut down on carbs and see if that helps. My friends sweated on Effexor but it worked very well for them [not for others], but weight can be lost on Effexor. I've read several other posts that said the same thing. Good luck.
