Beta Blockers for Anxiety????/

Posted by starlight on June 9, 2004, at 11:46:40

Hi - has anyone tried beta blockers for anxiety? I'm trying to narrow down what might be useful for my anxiety that we could add to my wellbutrin, which can aggravate angst, but almost everything else causes weight gain, which is an unacceptable side effect for me.

I used the following betablockers for performance
anxiety: pindolol beta2/1 (very effective), but erectile disfunction, bisoprolol beta1 (less effective, but perhaps dose to less and startet to late) almost no side effects, nebivolol beta1(no effect) dreams

I used atenolol for anxiety and it does seem to help. It can make you a little down, but it seems to make one feel more detached from the stressor, like you are separate from it.

does atenolol prevent trembling? (beta2 blockers seem to be more effective for trembling) and does it cause erectile disfunction for you?

According to studies bisoprolol is the most beta1-selective betablocker. But for performance anxiety i think it would be also good to have some beta2 blocking effect.

There is the newest betablocker (carvedilol) with vasodilatating effects. Somebody has taken it?

I perform as well, and have thought about trying them for performance since I definitely get anxious. And when I thought about it, I noticed that when I was on Wellbutrin, my performance anxiety was definitely worse which is bad for a singer.

Any weight gain on BB's?

I found that effexor (increases norep) definately increased anticipatory anxiety. The beta blockers for me made me feel more confident in who I am.

Sometimes performance anxiety is because we are afraid of what others will think. Beta blockers seemed to reduce that pressure for social acceptance.

absolutely no weight gain. it depends about the lipoprotein ldl hdl profile, which every betablocker can good or badly change. Most change it even better!
