Lithium, thyroid, lamictal -- PLEASE, please read

Posted by scarlett7 on May 30, 2004, at 12:46:00

I am in a severe depressive episode brought on by major injury to my foot that has resulted in immobilization, getting fired from my job as a result of my injury, etc.

I'm BP1 and was in remission for at least 2 years before this, and was just on Topamax and chose to go off lithium as a precaution because it caused a thyroid goiter, not that large and no change in my thyroid levels.

Recently, I tried lamictal, but the dizziness has been really unbearable, even at 12.5. I'm on crutches, and also taking meds for my foot, plus Topamax, so the additive effect of the dizziness is really hard for me to bear. I feel like I am going to fall over when I'm this dizzy.

I am thinking I need to go back to the li bcs by the time I titrate up to therapeutic dose on the Lamictal, my depression will be unbearable...it already is. I am suffering so much already, I can hardly stand it.

I'm worried about the effect of li on the thyroid. Also, I'm worried that I'm overreacting to the lamictal and that the dizziness will pass, but in the past, lithium was my silver bullet.

Any thoughts?

Anyone been on lithium w/ thryoid problems?

Anyone been on li and lamictal and can compare the two for efficacy?

Thanks...

Are you also taking an antidepressant? I never found li enough for depression alone.

I'm not taking an AD yet...in the past, they have agitated me, so the plan is to start a mood stabilizer first...
