I was hospitalized a year ago for a suicide attempt. My best friend of 34 years was having an affair with my boyfriend/fiance of 11 years. They were the two people I was the closest to in my life. I had just had a brain aneurism repaired and a week later a blood clot blocked my leg and they caught it just in time. I found out during my recovery. I also have thyroid disease and was told I had Lou Gehrigs Disease. I don't have it after all but didn't know it at the time. They claimed I was making mountains out of mole hills but I recently found out they have been fooling around all along. I just got home from my second trip to the hosp. This time no attempts on my life just pure sadness and loss.
I am now taking Hydrocodone 4 times daily for pain
Synthroid, Seroquel, 2 25mg. tabs 3 times daily, Clonapin, 3 times daily, Topamax,100 mgs daily, Zonegran, 100mgs daily, Lexapro, 20 mgs. daily, plus Premarin and 3 different blood pressure pills and a once weekly osteoporosis pill.
Does this seem like excessive medication for someone who the pdoc said is grieving like the death of a close loved one? He said it would take a year to get on with life in a normal way the same as when someone dies. I feel really over medicated and just would like some opinions
Thanks

I don't know how you would be seeing straight on all that stuff, but that's just from my humble opinion. Chemist might be able to give some insight

hello there, chemist here....sounds like quite a cocktail, and i agree with partlycloudy....lots of ``downers'' in your med list, which i would suspect isn't going to ease any depression. what is the opiate for, if you don't mind my asking....all the best, chemist

Pardon me for appearing dumb the opiate?? (and my daughter is a pharmacist lol) Would that be the Hydrocodone? I have a bad arm from an accident a few years ago, I fell of a bicycle and crushed my humerus. I have been on disability ever since. Anyway I am in a lot of pain and so Have been on these pills since 1999.

i should have been clearer, but you nailed it! as for your meds, my *opinion* is that if you dumped the seroquel, klonopin, topamax, and zonegran (an atypical antipsychotic, a benzodiazepene, and 2 anticonvulsants) and gave the lexapro some time to help boost your mood, things might be better. i do defer to the other posters on lexapro, where you will read mixed reviews. however, you do not indicate more than a serious depressive episode (i am am not diminishing the magnitude of this, i am stating that you have not indicated that you have been medicated for mental health issues before), and perhaps the other meds are bringing you further down and you should reconsider with your doctor.....keep us posted, and all the best, chemist

Thank You for your input. When you are in a hospital setting being medicated isn't such a big deal. You have nothing to do but exist basically. Being home is another thing, you have to function and function well. I feel sleepy most of the time. Not anything major just not like myself. I told the doctor I felt like I needed a "brain douche" and he just looked at me with a blank stare.
I never heard of anyone being on Topamax and Zonegran both. And why Seroquel? I read that it is an antipsychotic drug. I am not psychotic, I am depressed! How many of you take it for just for depression without being psychotic?
Yes, I will cut out these drugs one at a time and slowly. I will stay on the Lexapro as I know I need an antidepressant. Also my hair has been falling out in clumps. With all these drugs I don't know which one to blame it on.

Have you considered getting a second p-doc opinion? I wouldn't want to stop any meds before making sure I titrated slowly and with A LOT of supervision.
Let us know how you are doing!

I would blame it on the topamax. Sounds to me like they just slapped a bunch of drugs together for you, just in case you are bipolar 1 or 2. It seems pretty criminal to me, and i am sorry that you have experienced this. You have plenty of reasons to be depressed...what horiffic betrayals.....
WIshing you better days ahead.....
