My son has gained 60 lbs on Zyprexa in 5 months. School is out next week and his Dr. recommended we gradually switch him to Abilify. Last summer he had Abilify and couldn't sleep. He would get up during the night and roam the neighborhood(scary!).
Dr claims we would do a gradual switch this time. I hope it works! Zyprexa keeps him mentally stable so any switch might have an unknown, unpredictable effect. Suggestions Please?

Taking a moderate dose of Seroquel at night in addition to the Abilify might be worth taking a look at. If Abilify doesn't treat adequately the instability you describe, perhaps Seroquel would be an ideal replacement. I know people who have lost weight on high dosages of Seroquel - up to 700mg.

Try a half and half mix for a while. 10 zyprexa with 10 abilify. You might even be able to do the switch right away. One night if he can't sleep take less abilify or none and more zyprexa. I found it would help to take no abilify for a day, then I would feel better the next day on abilify. I was taking a mix the whole time.

Thanks Scott & Sebastian. After I posted this message, I started searching the web for comments on Abilify and I found a ton of them. Lots of negative ones! It brought back memories of last summer and after I had read them, I realized we can't let him go back on Abilify. He complained of hallucinations, upset stomach, headache agitation, insomnia and was very paranoid. The only benefit was weight loss. We have to figure out something else.

This link has both positive and negative comments about Abilify. It's a good one!

I will suggest taking a high dose of wellbutrin SR. Thats what works for me. It gives me energy, wakes me up, cuts appatite. Its an antidepressant. And since they have a generic now is very cheep!
