Hello,
Are any of the Anti-Convulsant medications e.g. carbamazepine (Tegretol), valproic acid (Depakote), gabapentin (Neurontin), topiramate (Topamax) etc etc. useful in fighting severe anxiety (GAD and social phobia)??
Thanks!

sorry...
I take Klonopin, which I believe is an anti-convulsant, and yes it works for anxiety. Also, it does not have some of the side effects of other Benzos like Valium.

I'm taking Keppra (500mg twice daily) and it is much better for me than Neurontin which did absolutely nothing for me.

Anticonvulsants have been the ONLY thing that has helped my anxiety, in my case, the infamous Neurontin. This has worked where no other antidepressant or benzo has. I believe all the anticonvulsants, some more than others, have potential for treating anxiety. I'm on generic Tegretol, now up to 800mg daily, and it helps fight my anxiety and anger. Indeed, it does. Though, what I have noticed, is that I'm worse if I take Tegretol, then skip a dose, than if I never took it at all. A missed dosage leaves me with NO patience or ability to cope with anything. I'm a hodgepodge of different disorders with nothing taking center stage.
