Meds that affect GABA

Posted by BIGDaddyachmed69 on May 9, 2004, at 21:16:02

My pdoc has diagnosed me with severe social anxiety, so I feel that the more meds I'm on that alter the transmission of GABA the better off I'll be. I know that there's probably more to it, that serotonin and dopamine are likely involved. I take Paxil, so I've got that covered...I don't know of any drugs that have an effect on dopamine. I think Wellbutrin and Abilify do in some way, I'm not entirely sure. Right now, in addition to Paxil I'm on Lamictal, Neurontin and Gabitril. I've read that Lamictal modulates the transmission of glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter. I'm also aware of the fact that Neurontin is structurally related to GABA, but doesn't necessarily alter its transmission. Biopsychiatry.com states that some neurons that respond to gabapentin are GABAergic. Gabitril is of course a GABA reuptake inhibitor. Anyone think that this is the way to go? I know I have WAY too much time on my hands, it must be my OCD...

MAOIs increase dopamine. Nardil (Phenelzine), & probably Marplan (Isocarboxazid) too, increase GABA aswell as mono-amines. I'm not sure how they do this. I've read they are both Hydrazine derivatives & this has something to do with why they have an effect on GABA. Parnate (Tranylcypramine) has no GABA effect as its unrelated to Hydrazine. Perhaps you'd like to look into this more.

My psychiatrist mentioned Nardil, and how he's had great success with it in treating patients who suffer from social anxiety disorder. My dad was on it for a number of years, as he's been diagnosed with major depression and generalized anxiety. Personally, I'd rather I wasn't on an MAOI...I'm not into the idea that I'd have to avoid certain foods.
