trying PAXIL CR - question

Posted by linkadge on May 7, 2004, at 20:27:47

giving it a whirl. I am a little concerned about the withdrawl if it's a no go. However, I do have some migrane symptoms that hopefully it might help.

I have a question. The CR formulation comes in doses of 25 mg. Is this supposed to be equivilant to the 20 mg dose of regular paxil ??

linkadge I believe that you are correct in the conversion of equivilence......I am not totally sure-also If you are having migraine type problems... are you sure that Paxil-CR is 'right for you'(sounds like a friggin drug commercial! lol ) the reason I question it is because I thought headache was one of the main side effects of Paxil.....might be wrong though!

I heard that it was one of the SSRI's used for headache due to its nitric oxide inhibition. Could be wrong.

Any reason for not going with regular Paxil. The half life is actually longer if you look at the prescribing info on both. Paxil CR simply has a barrier coating that passes your stomach into your lower intestine which for me caused major cramps and diarreah. Regular Paxil actually helped me with irritable bowel problems while the CR version made it much worse.

Glaxo's lame attempt to salvage sales since Paxil went generic in my opinion.

How could the half life possibly be lower ? If the drug is released over the course of 5 hours wouldn't you add 5 hours to whatever half-life you have?

Look at the prescribing info on both and re-read my post. The drug is released the same, the only difference is it takes longer to release because it has a protective barrier that bypasses your stomach so it dissolves in your lower intestine, hell, call them yourself and ask, they (Glaxo pharmacist) told me. The only big selling point "elliptical coating" was supposed to be the big relief from nausea, since it doesn't dissolve in your stomach. Regular Paxil never caused me nausea anyway, and the CR causes more cramping and diarreah.
