Lamictal/ SSRI side effects/sexual

Posted by Rachel Terese on May 2, 2004, at 9:16:57

Thank you all for your messages. I;m somewhat reassured that maybe things will work out. I will try sticking it out. I'm up to 100mg of lamictal tomorrow and am supposed to level out at 200mg/day. I'm also on 2mg Klonopin 2x/day for anxiety and insomnia. She said she might need to put me on an AD, but don't like SSRIs as they tend to make me manic with no sex drive. Does anyone know of some different AD with less sexual side effects than the SSRIs? Paxil made me feel great, but couldn't deal with the side effects or withdrawl. Thanks so much.

Hi Rachel,

If SSRI's make you manic a secondary TCA such as nortriptyline may be the thing you need. It is a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor with some mild sedating & anxiolytic qualities which should allow to cut back on your klonopin intake. Taking klonopin is OK for anxiety, but it's a bit of a dead end for sleep.

Cheers,
Panda.

Wellbutrin or Remeron did not have any sexual side effects on me. However, Wellbutrin alone was ineffective for my unipolar depression, while Remeron was effective, it also caused me to gain weight. Good luck to you.
