Libido - How does Prozac compare to other SSRIs?

Posted by SLS on April 28, 2004, at 21:39:42

I'm really bummed-out that Zoloft has abolished my sex drive. I might want to substitute it for another SRI, and I was thinking that Prozac might be a good choice. Any feedback would be helpful.

I can't compare Prozac to Zoloft, but I found Prozac much better than Luvox in terms of sexual dysfunction. Luvox took away everything -- desire, sensation and ability -- while Prozac had virtually no impact on desire and diminished but didn't destroy sensation and ability. On the other hand, Prozac tended to numb me emotionally, while Luvox didn't.

Hello Scott,

I took Prozac for over 5 years and it only affected my libido the first couple of months but not enough that I had to use Viagra. When I was taking Zoloft, I needed to take Viagra all the time, as Zoloft affected my libido big time. I think that was the reason I decided to stop taking Zoloft altogether although I was getting excellent depression relief from both. I had to interchange them every couple of years because of the poop out factor. Good Luck!

I've seen few anecdotes where people that were on SSRI took anti-allergy med (?): Loratidine and it *remarkably* helped with sexual side-effects.

Now that you mention it, I have been taking generic benadryl for seasonal allergies along with Nardil (also helps with insomnia from Nardil SE), and I have noticed that my libido has been unaffected. I am not sure if generic benadryl and loratadine are similiar in chemical makeup, but if they are, perhaps that may be the reason my libido is normal. Now I am thinking that maybe the Nardil is not affecting my libido or maybe it is because I am taking generic benadryl which is countering any sexual SE that Nardil may have. What do you guys think?
