Hi.I tried it a long time ago. It gave me a burning sensation in my stomach, which was bearable. However, it really wasn't that helpful for the insomnia I experienced in associated with the use of Nardil. I think it works similarly to alcohol. If you are intent on avoiding the use of the BZD receptor drugs, I think it is worth a try. It is safe enough.

http://www.rockford.uic.edu/jc/chloralh.htmHaven't tried it myself--am currently using
Benadryl, though, for MAOI insomnia. Some of this low tech stuff actually seems to work pretty well.Todd

Cholral Hydrate has been associated with liver tumors (granted rare, but well described), and, while very inexpensive, is rarely used today. It also has a withdrawl syndrome similar to alcohol withdrawl. There are better alternatives available, and I personally would explore them first.

I tried it once to avoid the benzos too.
It works semi-okay at first and then like everything you get tolerant. It also only comes as a liquid which tastes horrible, causes stomach upset, and some speculate it cause big time probs.
No real reason to think it is a viable alternative to benzos.

My daughter has tried multiple meds and got her first good nights sleep in years when she started it. Only problem is she is building up a tolerance and is once again not sleeping well. It is a very old drug and rarely used anymore but I think it is as safe as anything else. Good Luck.
