I have been taking ativan for about two years as part of the psych. cocktail for depression and socail anxiety. Over the past months I feel that the dosage 1mg 3 times a day is no longer working and is even starting to make me more anxious. My psych. has started me on Xanax XR, 1 mg 3 times a day. She never had me taper off on the ativan, do I need to do this as I started the XR. I read on the Phizer website that XR takes time to take affect like the anti dep. do, even 2 to 3 weeks?? And I really question her knowledge as she tried to switch me from Effexor to Wellbutrin cold turkey and I about went out of mind. Does anyone have other suggestions instead of Xanax or Ativan.I know they both help, but I know they are both very addictive. But if they work, what is worse?

I'm taking Xanax XR and I felt relief within a couple hours no build up time. I was taking regular xanax and my dr. felt that this was the way to go.
Good luck to you and I hope you find the relief I have.

the point of the XR version of Xanax is that it's supposed to last all day! why does your pdoc have you take it 3x a day? there is a 3mg tablet. i'm sure it would be much cheaper for you to take 1 3mg tablet once a day.
my personal thought-- stick with the ativan. i like it much better than xanax xr. i spent only two weeks on the xr before going back to regular xanax. it's so subtle i can't feel anything at all!

I think the multiple dosing with the XR version is to keep a steady blood level. Klonopin has a very long half-life, but docs still prescribe it 2-3 times daily.
