Hi folks: I have gotten alot of great advice from this site relative to my experiences with Effexor. Now I have a question about my Mom. Several years ago, my Mom was diagnoed with Bi-Polar disorder. She has taken various medications to deal with this and now presently takes Zoloft and Wellbutrin. Anyway, recently her personality has changed dramatically. She is always "up". Everything is described in over the top/dramatic terminology. I sometimes feel(the wife does too) that we are watching a dramatic presentation. She has become very smoochy(for lack of a better word), something I never experienced as a child and not something I care to deal with at age 40. I frequently receive emails describing how I am her moon/stars. While nice sentiments, hearing them for the first time years after my birth has been odd. Further, she spends a great deal of time buying things and when she is not buying she plans what she will buy in the future. Just the other day she contemplated taking a vintage ring and having it made into earrings for my son's future wife(he is presently 4). Shoes, pocketbooks, jewelry, you name it. Anyone experience this. I am concerned about a potential crash as is my Dad and wife. What do you all think. Thanks.

Hi:
As you suspected 'hypomanic' by taking 'Zoloft,' I totally agreed with. Because, SSRIs are prone to 'produce'/bring up to 'hypomanic episodes.' such as spending spree and very 'giddy' episodes. Other med., Wellbutrin is fairly a good AD med. that does not cause 'hypomania,' but some of folks complainging about 'insomnia' and other annoying, ... not serious forms of SEs.
Besides, Zoloft and Wellbutrin, I have no idea of what other med. your Mom taking, ... however in the case of Bipolar, she CERTAINLY needs mood stabilizer, such as Lithium, Depakote, Tegretol and more to list. In my suspicion/guessing, without any M.S. effect, ... only two AD causing her 'hypomania.' If you could convince your mother to go to the pdoc., it might be a best way to control her current condition, 'hypomania,' because after this episode, the next comes, as you might already know, ... is 'deep depression.'

I, personally, would be very concerned. Most of what you are describing is "mania". The higher it gets the more dangerous it gets. I would call her doctor or get a second opinion. You do have good reason to worry. Take care.

Wellbeutrin was a bad med for me and made me VERY manic almost immediately. I know that zoloft can cause mania as well. I would definetly get her to a pdoc and have her meds re-evaulated because it does sound like she is experiencing hypomania, and it could get worse.

The same thing happened to me on Celexa 20 mg for 18 months- I was hypomania. After stopping cold for 40 days on Celexa I went into a severe depression. The doctor than put me on Zoloft 150 mg for 75 days and I stayed in depression. I quit Zoloft two weeks ago and am now on Lamictal 25mg for the second day and am feeling normal.
This is the end of the thread.
