lamictal questions

Posted by linnette on April 12, 2004, at 12:09:28

I haven't posted for a while now.. Partly because I am pretty stable now on 200 mg lamictal, along with 100 mg zoloft.

I have been on the lamictal since September of 2003, and gradually worked my way up and thru all the side effects, but I can say it has been worth it.

I still have a little bit of agitation, but that is not the reason for my post. Has anyone out there had a problem with just general skin sensitivity, that is, my skin gets abrased real easy and if I have an itch or something and scratch, the skin is real easy to scrape the skin off...it heals of course, but it is just an annoyance, and I am hoping it isn't a sign of another problem, as the lamictal can cause some skin issues..

I surely don't want to quit the lamictal, and this may be something I just have to put up with with. Any feedback would be great.

I've been on Lamictal 200mg for six months now. I have found it to be very helpful for my BPII. My moods are much more stable. I haven't had any of the side effects you mention. Of course, different people have various side effects. Just thought I'd mention this to share my experience.

Hi Linette,

I agree that lamictal is a wonderful drug. I take 350 mg. I thought I was developing the rash, but it turned out to be exzema (sp?). Nonetheless, I was terrified. Please see a dermatologist. That is their specialty. Describe that you are concerned that you might be having a reaction to the medicine. Hopefully it's nothing; it doensn't sound too severe. Good luck!

Hi, I am just starting Lamictal and I have noticed some itchiness but I think I'm just being a bit paranoid about it because everyone talks so much about the rash. The itchy feeling doesn't stay around very long and there is no evidence of a rash. It could just be dry skin for all I know with the change of the seasons...

My skin is normally sensitive and "tears" easily like you said so if Lamictal does this it won't have any effect on me!

I am SLOWLY getting into my Lamictal, only on 50mg in the 4th week. My pdoc told me today that she thinks 150mg is the place for me, but I'm noticing that most people are taking much more. I just finished my taper of Effexor, which although I super happy to be off of, the "discontinuation syndrome" is horrible.

Maybe it's just as much withdraw as it is the depression rearing its ugly head since I don't have enough Lamictal in my system yet... I am BPI with severe depressions. I've gone through my share of ADs, until we finally figured it out (I don't have a therapist, just go to my pdoc every 8 weeks).

Is anyone else in this boat? Will the Lamictal be enough to counteract the depression?

It has been my experience that lamictal alone will not totally eliminate my own depression. I also take zoloft and 20 mg nortriptyline for sleep.

The side effects did take awhile to get past.

Maybe discontinuing the Effexor is causing you some distress as well. It all gets very confusing doesn't it when you are doing trials of different meds?

Hang in there; lamictal is a great medication, and worth the wait. I no longer have the severe ups and downs, still have my days though. I take 200 mg of lamictal and sometimes the agitation makes me wonder if I should be at a lower dose.
