Today, my pdoc gave me samples of Depakote -- 250 mg extended release. He wants me to take up to 4 tablets per day for the next few days to bring me out of my anxious state. I am somewhat apprehensive about doing this. I guess it's my natural fear of that now I've moved beyond the "safe" and "normal" drugs like SSRI's into the "scary" world of mood stabilizers. My pdoc says we will probably switch to Lamictal sooner or later but wants to start on this. Any thoughts or advice?

>Would it help if I said that the SSRI world isn't all that safe or normal? :) I actually feel that a lot of the mood stabilizers are safer than SSRI's.

I was on Depakote ER 1250mg for an agitated manic state. Within days I began to feel so much better. I felt much less anxious/agitated and within a few weeks I was able to function once again. I had a few bothersome side effects but they eventually subsided. My Pdoc did switch me to Lamictal and I've been on a 200mg dose for three months. I have not had any side effects on Lamictal other than some anxiety each time we increased the dose by 25mg every other week. Lamictal is working just as well as Depakote did and I have less depression than I've have had in the past. Hope this helps.
