Abilify and Zyprexa

Posted by EAL on April 7, 2004, at 17:19:54

I have been taking zyprexa for a number of years. And, like a lot of other people on this list, gained a lot of weight and slept 12 hours a night.
I have been on abilify for about 3 weeks. On abilify, I only sleep 8 hours and am not hungry. (When I tried abilify several months ago I developed akineskthia from taking 10 mg, but now I'm only taking 2.5 and I don't have that problem.)

My question is how do people find this drug for controlling the positive and negative symptoms of schizoprehnia? (I like zyprexa better for psych. symptoms.) Also, is it wrong to be taking zyprexa and abilify together. I read that this is the case because they are both Dopamine D2 Agtagonsim. WHat would be the side effects from doing this?

Thanks,
EAL

I take 5mg Abilify and 5 mg Zyprexa. My dx is not scitzophrenia but it's more like psycotic depression, GAD and BPD.

I can't take AD's so I'm stuck with the antipsychotics. For me, the combo has helped with hallucenations, hostility, racing thougts and general sluggishness. It has not helped with suicidal ideations, anxiety, (abilify worsens it) and mood swings. I also have fatigue w/pain. The Abilify helps a little with the fatigue but the Zyprexa knocks me right down. I have to take Halcion to sleep despite the fatigue.

Anyway, that's my experience. And yes, it is a safe combo so you do't need to worry about that.

Hope this helps,

SDJ

My 16 old son has taken both separately. Abilify was first and did help w/ psychotic symptoms but at that time was combined w/ lexapro in the evenings. This combo did not work well, leaving him with almost no sleep.
With Zyprexa he has gained a lot of weight in the past 6 mo. but psychologically he has improved by leaps and bounds. Of course the weight has to go down and his Blood Pressure is up also. The Psy Dr. suggested combining Abilify and Zyprexa by gradually adding Abilify a few mg. at a time till his appetite is under control. We are trying not to do this until the school year is over.

Should be no problem taking them together. My doc had me on that combo. Side-effect cancel an some remain. I still didn't like the abilify, so I only take zyprexa.
