Can desipramine or nortriptyline work on anxiety?

Posted by ravenstorm on April 6, 2004, at 11:32:46

Someone please help! I went through severe paxil withdrawal 7 months ago (functioned perfectly on only 5mg and then 2mg for several years but when did the last excruciating titration down got worse depression and anxiety than I have ever had in my life) and have been unsuccessfully trying to get on to another AD.

Unfortunately, the first pdoc I went to wanted me on a TCA (cause I have GERD) or back on the paxil. Tried Celexa and had a weird response, tried nortrip and my heart beat out of my chest (but am considering trying it again cause desperate). Wanted to try prozac but that was when pdoc insisted I go back on paxil (she was pissed I didn't try the celexa or nortrip for more than a week). I refused and that is when the big tragedy happened. My husband took me to a naturopath who told me to take a bunch of supplements on an EMPTY STOMACH, which I knew I couldn't handle but I was desperate and he said every single person he had ever put on them recovered. This destroyed my stomach. So, when I finally got some prozac from my GP, I couldn't tolerate the severe heartburn and stomach upset (I did try it for six weeks to see if it would diminish--it didn't). It just makes me so mad because I have always been able to take prozac in the past.

I just went to a new pdoc yesterday, and he was all for me being on an ssri (unlike the previous doc) but now I can't take one because my stomach is so bad. I wish I would have been with him first. He would have just given me the prozac back in Decemeber and I would be better by now!!

Anyway, based on the stomach problems, he now suggested desipramine or remeron. Not crazy about the idea of remeron and the weight gain but would desipramine work on anxiety. I have both anxiety and depression and SAD.

Sorry this is so long and probably doesn't make much sense. I can't believe I was a totally functioning person 7 months ago (husband and I were planning on getting pregnant this fall when I did my final titration down on the paxil and all hell broke loose.)

I just want to get better.

Also, am scared if I try remeron and it sucks that I won't be able to get off that either after the paxil nightmare!

Thanks for listening

I've taken both nortriptyline and desipramine and don't think desipramine is the best choice for anxiety, as it tends to stimulate beta adrenergic receptors--this is the opposite of the mild anti-anxiety effects beta blockers can have. Nortriptyline is much better on anxiety, but I'm concerned about your report of its effect on your heart. FWIW, desipramine caused tachycardia for me and increased my heart rate into the 90's, but I found this to be of no real consequence.
