hey I was wondering if anyone could help me out with something. I know it's bad to take klonopin with alcohol (or other downers) b/c it could depress your cns so much you could die or go into coma. Besides that , however, does the klonopin and alcohol together create more toxicity in your liver than say if you consumed alcohol while taking prozac or paxil or other pills? (which I know is not necesarily good either)
thanks

I don't think the problem lies with the liver. I'm almost sure that the problem lies with the central nervous system. Both benzo drugs and alcohol are depressants and can lower respiratory functions to near-lethal levels when used together.,

Cubby , now that you mention that, I think that you are right on track. I think if we have a healthy liver, that drugs , toxins, etc are going to be extensively metabolized , broken down and eventually eliminated from the body.

If you can decipher this, maybe it will help:
"The benzodiazepine sedatives include Valium, Librium, Halcion, Xanax, Ativan, Serax, and Klonopin, to name just a few. In addition to potential effects on lipophosphate nerve membranes, these drugs work by allosterically enhancing the effect of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA at post-synaptic receptors. That is, they "bend" the receptor slightly so that GABA molecules attach to and activate their receptors more effectively and more often. Their chief advantage over the barbiturates, such as seconal, nembutal and phenobarbital, is that they do not act directly to open chloride ion channels, and as such are not as lethal in overdose. However, polypharmacy with alcohol and benzos is potentially fatal, as ethanol opens this channel and adds synergistically to generalized depressant effects."

A couple months ago, I went to a Moroso car race and i took 2 klonopins and drank tons of beer for the hell of it. It felt GREAT, until the next day. I couldnt move, and my breathing was so shallow and i knew for a fact that i was going to die. My heart was slightly beating, and i was so weak, as if i was dead. I will never drink with Klonopin again. 10 times stronger than xanax.

From what I've gathered (from your responses and other web resources), it does seem that the problem lies with depressing your CNS too far rather then with implicit toxicity of the benzo in the liver with the alcohol...
But also just in case anyone wants some extra insurance, much research has made find these 4 (main) supps you can get over counter that if taken before, after drinking/taking meds or just in general will probably provide alot of protection from liver damage to occuring and also help the liver heal itself. they are:1. SAM-E
2. sylmarin (milk thistle)
3. lecitin (which mimicks PPN, a drug avail in europe for treating serious liver problems)
4. N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)*------------------------------------
also what i have read about is that the amino acid l glutamine used in weight lifting when taken before going to drink protects your liver and also really reduces any negative effects the next day.regards

I the most I have taken of Klonopin and subsequently drank is 2mg. I became very drunk under this condition, and later, in my most drunken state, proceeded to run home one mile in the middle of a freezing cold night. I wasn't even close to falling into a "coma". I would say you would have to taken a LOT of the stuff to induce that state.b.
