i have jsut started taking effexor. I take ectasy occasionly, i wondered would there be any really bad effects? does anyone know? or is it pretty much like the warning about not drinking which does not seen to make any odds? thanks.

Any serotonin antidepressant and ecstacy equals serotonin syndrome. I've seen it and experienced it.I've also been hospitalized for inadvertent problems wth effexor and meth {ampehtamine poisoning}.
It's no joke. One of my psychiatrists said many years ago when I was prone to such activity that I should get off the antidepressant a week before I use anything fi i wanted to live.
He also said if I were on Wellbutrin that I would need to do the same.
I am not advocating your activity no matter what peter Jennings says because each person is different, it's not legal, and you don't know what you are buying anyways {it's not like we always ask or get solid information about guinea pig experiences before we shell out the money to strange people}. However, don't risk your health, time and $$ on trying to cheat this. This is not official medical advice either.

I agree with PsychoSage. This is seriously a bad idea, as Ecstasy is a powerful releaser of serotonin. You would essentially be setting up the same conditions as the combination of an MAOI and SSRI produces, the net result of which is an excellent chance of suffering serotonin syndrome. Don't do it.Todd

The above statements are incorrect.
A SSRI blocks the pathways that MDMA (ecstasy) uses for its actions on neurons.
The effects of the ecstasy will be strongly diminished. Just a waste of your money.

I see that you are actually correct, and I believe I let my prudishness impede a more thorough investigation. To me, it seems unwise for a depressed person already on an antidepressant to be taking Ecstasy, which is a drug that I perceive as dangerous and having long term deleterious effects, but I must admit to never having used it and only being vaguely familiar with it. However, my own use of alcohol while on antidepressants is also a practice some people might feel is dangerous and stupid, but it has not generally not been a big problem for me with most of the ADs I've been on.

I wish I had more information - but Effexor is a distant cousin of MDMA. Also, MDMA is basically a form of amphetamine. I don't think it's good to combine these drugs. MDMA also screws up your internal thermostat - causing one to easily overheat and become severely dehydrated in certain settings.
