I was just wondering if anyone has ever taken any diet pills with their antidepressants? I just need to lose about 10 pounds before summer and was going to incorporate these with my work outs. I am currently on Lexapro 20mg and Wellbutrin 300mg. I called the pharmacist to see if I could use a diet pill. She suggested that I didn't. But was unable to give me any good reason why I shouldn't. She just said it was a bad idea. That didn't really work for me. I am interested about anyone's experiences or education/thoughts about combining the two. Thanks.

I think there's a previous post that addresses this but basically the combination of Wellbutrin and some diet pills (that contain caffiene) can cause trouble. Many people abstain from caffiene altogether when on Wellbutrin to avoid complications such as racing heart, dizziness, excess anxiety, etc.
Personally, I was on the same combo of things and no interaction with caffiene, diet pills and my meds. If you're thinking about doing it, try one pills first instead of the normal dosing of 2-3 diet pills but be careful.

Thanks for the info Wildflower. I have never had a problem with Wellbutrin and caffeine. I'll post after I try this and let ya know how it goes.

Its because of the wellbutrin. Wellbutrin and diet pills have similar mechanisims. Wellbutrin can be used as a diet pill.

Do you know what similar mechanisms the diet pills and Wellbutrin have? Do you know if they are dangerous together or just speculated to be dangerous? The Wellbutrin doesn't seem to be working for me as a diet pill. I haven't gained weight with it. But a few months ago I gained weight with Zyprexa (I am no longer on it). I am still trying to lose some of that weight. Or if anyone happens to know some webpages I could check out to get further information on this that would be awesome. I have tried to search the net and have been very unsuccessful at finding anything. Thanks for your help.

Can be dangerous. Wellbutrin and diet pills are normaly stimulants. Guess you could heart attack or seizure. If you are taking a high dose of Wellbutrin (like 300mg SR) you probably should not take diet pills.

Thanks for the info. It's a little frusterating trying to figure out what you can and cannot take with antidepressants. A heart attack doesn't sound like a very good time to me.

lelebug,
Please be careful. First of all, if you were just on Lexapro, I would say that since it can cause anxiety, a diet pill added to it could make you uncomfortable (anxious). But you are also on Wellbutrin. Wellbutrin is notorious for causing anxiety. It targets the norepinephrine in the brain (along with Dopamine and Serotonin). A diet drug without ephedra would most likely make you uncomfortable. A diet drug with ephedra (mah juang) is basically adding more of the chemical to the brain (ephedra) that the Wellbutrin is targeting. I would guess that, well, I wouldn't recommend doing it. You should really check with your doctor - it could even be dangerous.

>Your lexapro is probably muting some of what is going on with the wellbutrin even though they are two different systems being affected mostly. I am not sure how this works out, but if you went on wellbutrin alone I am sure you would notice a bit more stimulation.
Either way, the seizure possibility is definitely real. Wellbutrin is slower acting then a diet pill or stimulant, so you can't tell if you are really over doing itby adding something else at all while on it.
What kind of diet pills did you have in mind? I think topamax is used for weight loss. It is not a stimulant type drug at all.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking of taking Hydroxycut ephdra-free. I am really conflicted right now with looking really good by dropping a few pounds and having a good summer. Or just keeping on my meds and looking so so. Last summer I was severly depressed. The only things I did were to sleep and eat. Which made me more depressed. My self esteem was in the toilet. I know I am the kind of person that associates happiness with how good I am looking. It's not a healthy way to think, but it's how I am regardless. Which brings me back around to the conflict of really trying to avoid having a bad time this year. I am trying to weigh my options and make a good decision. It just seems that the diet pill is such an easy band aid. Lose weight, look great AND have energy to go to work and school and go have fun with my friends and family. Kind of to good to be true in one little pill. I had taken Ephedrine pills before. I lost A LOT of weight. I was really happy at the time, but of coarse it didn't last. I am just really trying to sort all this out in my head, thanks for letting me babble.

Hi- I'm on 300 mg Wellbutrin and have been taking it in combination with Depakote and an assortment of different SSRIs for about 7 years. When I gained weight with Celexa, I took Dexatrim Natural to curb my appetite. They have two formulas: one with green tea and one without. I've taken both - there isn't much of a difference between them, really. And I don't even think they make the kind with caffeine anymore. Anyway, it seems to really work and I didn't get jittery at all. I don't know if you're looking for an appetite suppressant with thermogenic features or simply an appetite suppressant...I don't think Dexatrim does the thermogenic thing. But make sure you're getting plenty of cardio exercise (3-4 x a week at 30 minutes at least each time)! That will burn through those ten pounds quickly and, most importantly, they'll stay off.
Good luck! Let us know how it's going...
