side effect...or not?

Posted by agnessa on March 23, 2004, at 19:08:06

This is my first time posting here and I really need some insight. I am a 25 year old female who started taking 30mg of Paxil daily about four years ago. I am on Paxil because of generalized anxiety and for body dysmorphic disorder. The Paxil made me feel great and I have accomplished things I wouldn't have even thought about before. Anyway, my question is, is it possible to get a side-effect after roughly 2 years of being on an SSRI? See, I never used to have a problem with my libido, even after being on Paxil for about 2 years, but over the last year or so it has diminished to practically nothing. This really, really sucks as I have been in a serious relationship for over three years now, and when we first met, I was always ready to go :) AND now I could care less about sex either way...This has been so frusterating that I weaned myself off of Paxil and stayed off for about one month, only to have my anxiety and my symptoms of BDD return. Even during this time that I was off of the Paxil, my sex drive didn't return. I am thinking of getting my thyroid tested...what do you guys think? I actually started off on Prozac before the Paxil, and had no side effects which was great, except I was still really moody all of the time. Do you think I should try a different SSRI, or add something like wellbutrin? Currently I am on 20mg Paxil....any comments/advice would be great!

Yes, adding Wellbutrin would be a good thing to try for your libido problem, as it has proven efficacy and not a lot of side effects (keep in mind that it is certainly not effective in every single case). A pet peeve of mine is people who decide they have to live with SSRI sexual side effects in order to feel better. Don't accept that notion if this is an important issue for you. My opinion is that it is possible to take antidepressants and not have your sexuality shot to hell, but it may take some persistence and effort to find the right med or mix of meds.
