I have ADHD & have been on both Adderall & Ritalin (at different periods in time, of course!). I would like to know how Dexedrine's effects supposedly differ from Adderall's? I found out while on a recent test-drive of Ritalin (appx. 2 mos.) that Adderall worked much better for me with fewer nasty side effects. However, after being on it for over a year, I was beginning to experience a little poop-out with it. I would like to explore my options, though, and if nothing else would like to get back on the Adderall. Does anyone here have any insight in this area? If so, please share!! I switched to Ritalin a few months ago as per my request, kind of...I mean, I hate to have to switch meds again & my pdoc was hopeful that it would work after she doubled the dosage last month. Currently, I have let the dose run out & have been contemplating how to tell her this coming week that it doesn't seem to, um, really work for me & that I think I need to switch again...She has never mentioned dexedrine or desoxyn to me, so I wonder if she is very familiar with either! I would think that desoxyn is definitely NOT one of the stimulants that pdocs Rx often as it is, in all reality, a low dose of methamphetamine. I wish I had a doc that specialized in just medicating for ADHD sometimes!! Another stipulation I have is that I cannot wait 6-8 wks. or whatever for, say, Strattera (by itself), since I have a load of school work to catch up on in a short amount of time! If anyone is well-versed/experienced in this region of meds for ADHD I would be much obliged. Thanks so much!!

In reply to Dexedrine switch? info!!, posted by Laree on March 21, 2004, at 23:11:33
Hi Laree,
I am currently taken Adderall XR (20mg/day) and really like it. BUT, since I am a bit obsessive I just HAD to try Ritalin & Dexedrine to see if Adderall was the best stimulant for me. I performed this little experiment over the past week, so I will share with you my results.
Dexedrine: I wanted to try this one b/c I read some earlier posts where a couple people with anxiety problems said Dexedrine caused less anxiety than Adderall. My anxiety problems have actually improved quite a bit on Adderall, but I thought maybe Dexedrine would be even better. HOWEVER, after trying it I found that it: (1) gave me a little bit more anxiety; (2) I felt a noticable and very uncomfortable withdrawl as it wore off (unlike Adderall); and (3) it doesn't last as long as Adderall XR (which meant it had to worry about withdrawl twice per day). In short, I felt better on Adderall XR because it was smoother and more effective for me, PLUS I am too busy to risk suffering withdrawls during my day (or at night when I want to sleep).
Ritalin: I took it in the form of Metadate ER (one of the extended release forms of ritalin). I had heard several people with anxiety problems say that Ritalin gives much more anxiety. The first day I tried it, and it made me feel so uneasy/anxious, that I had to take a Klonopin. It seemed to help with focus, but the anxiety was too unconfortable, and it was no more helpful for me (probably less so) than the Adderall XR.
Of course these were just my experiences. Your body may always react differently, especially if you don't have any anxiety problems. I hope I was helpful to you.
This is the end of the thread.
