Doxepin, amitriptyline, nortriptyline, and trazodone are all available as generics and have sedating properties. All things considered, I would probably talk to my doctor about trazodone first if I were in your situation.Todd

for over a year and it is the best thing i have found...........cheap, good solid sleep, no hangover.......far better than ambien

What ever you do please stay away from over the counter sleep meds. I took those for about four years strait and they degenerated the cartilage in my hip and back.
Melatonin is a good natural alternative that can be found in the supplement section of any store.

I was on trazadone for awhile and it certainly helped me sleep, but was not that useful for me given that my schedule changed regularly and I couldn't develop a regular sleep pattern. If you can get regular Zs at regular times, traz may be for you.

I agree with the trazodone. It's been my savior. Also, try taking your effexor in the AM. I found that helped me tremendously.
