can't sleep on effexor

Posted by Jhall131 on March 14, 2004, at 9:27:33

I can fall asleep ok, but as soon as I wake up i have difficulty getting back to sleep. Then i just lay there in bed. Sometimes i wake up at 600 in the morning after going to bed at 100 and can't get back to sleep. Then by 900 i am ready to pass out. Any suggestions on what i should do.

Hi Jamie,

I swallow 300mg worth of Effexor XR per day. It gives me nausea, anorgasmia & insomnia. I also take 30mg of Remeron as a sleep aid & it also fixes the nausea & anorgasmia for me. Remeron is not for everyone, however. Side effects a lot of people get is increased appetite & weigh gain. Fortunately I didn't, although I don't care, as getting decent sleep seems to make me happier. :)

Cheers,
Panda.

Dr. Bob is going to re-direct me again to 'Alternative' for mentioning this on the perscription board, BUT since this is where you posted your question for suggestions, this is where i will respond. (It DOES fit BOTH boards)

Licorice Root Tea,
Licorice Root Tea,
and Licorice Root Tea.

Effexor was awful for me in the way you describe, Jhall131. LRT by Twinlabs/Alvita saved my sleep-depraved soul also when i was on Wellbutrin, and again as the natural insomniac that i have been All My Life. It is stronger than the multitude of meds that have been prescribed for me. It is preferable to me because it leaves no after-or-side effects that i refused to tolerate. Warm LRT worked for me very quickly (i found i needed to sip while in bed, reading), with my soup-bowl sized teacup; granted. With a little raw milk, sometimes. In the morning awoke alert and refreshed. In a feeling of 'wholeness' that no RXs had ever offered. And i am a VERY tough nut to crack.

a little more than 2cents worth,
Escher

I was miserable when I first switched to Effexor. The biggest thing that helped me was to take it in the morning. My pdoc gave me Ambien to sleep, but after a while, I was able to go back to Trazodone 100 mg. See if that helps.

How long have you been on Effexor? I couldn't sleep at all the first night I was on Effexor, and then the insomnia gradually (very very gradually) wore off. I was able to sleep well after a few weeks or so.

I take 20mg of Buspar at night about half an hour before bedtime. Seems to help. Also playing relaxing music very low on stereo helps.

Redirect: Licorice Root Tea

At what time do you take your Effexor? Is the sleep problem related to the time of the day you take it?

Hey Sad Panda
My pdoc just gave me Remeron at night (with my 10 mg Lexapro and 1/8 mg klonopin) How much do you take of the Remeron? What can I expect (how soon does it work for sleep, hangover, etc)? She gave me 15 mg; should I try 7.5 the first night? thank you!!

It takes about 30 minutes to kick in. I would start with 7.5mg & I wouldn't start it until you know you have the next day free as it can make you sleep for 12 hours. The hangover factor depends on how well you metabolize it.

Keep us posted on how you go with it. :)

Panda.

sad panda, I went to bed before I got your post, unfortunately!! I took 15 mg (too thivk to split!) and feel like I've been hit by a mack truck!! My pdoc said wait a few days and take 30mgs because more gives less effect (paradoxical reaction). I wish I had waited til a weekend to try. Does the remeron get less intense? will it potentiate the lexapro if I'm taking 30 mgs for a couple weeks? Thanks so much ! Anjul

Hi Anjul,

It's not always the case that a higher dose reduces sedation. Are you taking the drug only for sleep? If so, I would start at 7.5mg & see if that is enough.

For me 15mg keeps me asleep for 8 hours, 30mg makes me sleep for 9 hours. The only reason I am taking 30mg is it lets me take more Effexor. Effexor gives me very bad nausea, but Remeron has anti-nausea properties. Remeron also is a mild anxiolytic & may allow you to taper off from taking Benzos.

Cheers,
Panda.

How did you learn so much? I was actually hoping that the remeron would let me get off my 1/8 mg klonopin. The rememron was prescribed just for sleep. It made me feel so bad (even today I feel weird) I was feeling afraid to take it again. Maybe I will try the 7.5 in a few days... Anjul

Hi Anjul,

I don't know that much, I get all my info from the net & I really only know about the AD's that I can get.

For sleep only useage I would never take any more than 15mg. After a while the dopey/drugged feeling goes away, but it still makes it easier for me to go to sleep & stay asleep.

Cheers,
Panda.

Hi Anjul,
I am glad to see your trying remeron. When I first started taking it my Dr. told me to do it over a weekend. My first night I couldn't hardly stand up to make it to bed. But....that does get much better. And taking 30mg. won't leave you as tired but still give you quality sleep. My Dr. told me with remeron the lower the dose the stronger it is. I take 15mg. at bedtime & sleep great. I can't take 30 as I have to much swelling in feet & ankles. Hang in there-it will get better.

Hi Zena,

It's exactly the same for me. After I take it I feel no different, the drugged to the eyeballs feeling is gone, but I still go to sleep within 5 minutes of going to bed & I awake refreshed. It's fabulous after 30+ years tossing & turning & waking up wanting more sleep. 30mg makes my feet swell too, but if I wake around alot they go down.

Cheers,
Panda.

I just wanted to let you know, that this medication Remeron has given me my life back! No other medications helped for anxiety, depression, and sleep problems before. It's true that when you 1st start Remeron you will feel very drowsy right away, and have difficulty walking to your bed. (Maybe try taking it just before you jump into bed for the 1st liitle while) This does go away, I'd say after a month, and I never woke up drowsy. It is also true that the lower your dose of remeron the more sedated you will feel, so maybe talk to your doc about increasing the dose to decrease the sedation. Please give it a chance. I've never slept better, and woke up refreshed. I never thought I would ever sleep through the night again and wake up before 2pm. Now I go to bed at 11pm, and up by 7am!! Good Luck
