What medication would make one mute

Posted by shadows721 on March 12, 2004, at 3:43:35

I understand my uncle is under state mandated medication. They tell me he is a paranoid schziophrenic. They say he never talks and drools a lot. What type of antipsychotic medication would make one do that? Since he has a history of violence, they are medicating him where he is literally stupid. That seems scary too. Whew!

They could use any of the first or second generation antipychotics, but it wouldn't be third generation 'atypicals' like Zyperxa, Risperdal, Solian & Seroquel as they are far too expensive.

Cheers,

I agree with Panda. My pdoc says drooling is one of the early signs of pseudo-parkinsonism/extrapyramidal side effects from these meds, and the muteness might be from severe sedation - these older antipsychotics have sometimes been called "chemical straitjackets". In high doses for long periods the extrapyramidal symptoms can lead to permanent damage (tardive diskinesia).

If you have any way to act as an advocate for your uncle, see if you can get his medication reviewed. I know little personally about management of this type of condition, but as Panda says there are newer, better medications, even if they are expensive. Maybe a compromise - a mixed regime?
