hey everybody,
i was wondering if anyone out there is on topamax and risperdal. my doctor recently put me on topamax to help with me lose some weight that i had gained from being on risperdal. currently i am 1 mg risperdal and 200 mg topamax daily. does anyone have any positive weight loss experiences from being on these 2 meds together?

My son was very active for the first 5 months that he was on Zyprexa. Suddenly he began to slow down and as he did, he also began to gain weight. His Psy Dr. suggested Topamax, but it seems that it is written up as an anti seizure medication. The Dr. seems to think it could replace the Zyprexa and help my son lose weight. Can anyone tell us more about the use of topamax as an anti psychotic?

First, Topamax is NOT anti-psycho. med., and this med. is just anti-seizure med., and uses for mostly Bipolar and of course Epilepsy. Thus, Topamax can NEVER be replaced by Zyprexa and vice versa. Beside this, above, Topamax is completely different medication and its effectiveness and property is NEVER like Zyprexa that is made for 'shizophrenia and some of Bipolar. In my personal opinion/view, this option must be totally 'out of the list' regarding the alleviation of your son's shizo.
Like I said the above, Topamax is anti-seizure med. and a sort of the weaker mood-stabilizer for just 'add-on' med. that even does NOT come close to any of those potent med., such as Zyprexa and other AP meds.In my guess, the reason why your son's pdoc. trying to replace(if that is true, ...), he/she might attempt to help your son's weight issue VERY desperately. Then, you and your son needs to decide which is to be 'best' for your son's emotional and mental health/well-being. Because, some of pdocs. hesitate to keep prescribing the same med. as knowing his/her patients are NEVER happy even though the pdoc. knows VERY WELL his/her patients not get well without Zyprexa. Then, the rest seems all up to you.
