Mike - The one to take is the one that works for you. There are differences between the 2 SSRIs, though. Prozac and it's active metabolites half-life (the time it takes for half of the drug to be excreted from the body) is about 100 hours. To clear your body so you can try, say, an MAOI is 5 weeks (wash out period). Celexa's half life is about a day, which makes it easier to switch to a different class of antidepressants (about a 2 week wash out). Celexa selectively binds to the serotonin reuptake site, while Prozac binds to many other receptors as well (mucarinic, alpha-adrenergic, etc. - but less so than TCAs). In theory, Celexa is supposed to have fewer side effects (and probably does in most people). I have found Celexa to be a less effective antidepressant than Prozac overall, but this is a generalization. As has been said on this site many times YMMV (your mileage may vary) as everyone's physiology is slightly different. So, the answer to your question is..."I dunno" (you have to try them to find out). - Cam W.

> e-me...some feed backAs Cam mentioned, there is no way to tell without a personal trial. Each person's chemistry is different. And each person's chemistry will prefer one medication molecule over another. Though all the SSRIs basically accomplish the same end result, they do so in different ways.
I've tried all the SSRIs. My favorite is Prozac, mainly because it's the only one that doesn't give me sexual problems. In fact it actually enhances sexual function for me. There are scattered reports of Prozac improving sex, but we don't hear such reports very much with any of the other SSRIs. I also like the fact that Prozac isn't sedating. Celexa made me feel kind of tired.
Prozac's long halflife allows all kinds of custom dosing. For example, 40mg every other day instead of 20mg every day. I've even heard of someone taking 60mg once a week and instead of 10mg every day. This kind of dosing can be experimented with to lessen any side effects. And if someone must stop Prozac treatment, the long halflife makes withdrawals very easy in comparison to the other SSRIs.
But the bottom line is, only a personal trial will tell. JohnL

Isn't sedating?
I would sit at my desk wondering what the hell i'd been doing. I was a zombie.I think I'm learning that it is amazing how each of us reacts so differently to each drug. I was excited to try prozac years ago as It was sopopular I was sure it would work for me :(
Also fairly new to this site upon reading how individuals can have such different reactions was dissapointing.

>celexa i haven't tried but if you want to be tapping your foot a million times a second clenching your jaw and not sleeping for days then prozac's your best bet..and it performs worse than escitalopram and sertraline in the severely depressed.

Let's hope that informed opinion helped Mike make his mind up 9 years ago.
