Anyone live in Canada?

Posted by rianny on February 14, 2004, at 1:03:18

I live in BC, Canada, and I need a new psychiatrist because I didn't like the last one.
I wonder if I need a referral from family doctor (primary doctor) to see a psychiatrist.

I had the last psychiatrist from my family doc, but I now have a new family doctor. I'm afraid that if he'll refer me to a new psychiatrist.

Hi,
Im from Ontario and you definately need a referal by a family doc to see a psychiatrist in our fare country... Its the only way... except of course, going into the ER and speaking to the psychiatric resident or on-call doc... But a referal is necessary either way
good luck

I'm in Quebec.

For a pdoc visit there are several ways. If you've already seen a psychiatrist at a psychiatric hospital ... then even a refferal from your psychologist could work.

Otherwise you either a) need a referral from your family doctor or b) go to the ER and say you're suicidal ... you should be able to see one very quickly ... although the referral is infinitely preferrable. It all depends on how much in a hurry you are.

In BC also........................

You need to get a referral from your family doc. It will take about 6 months to see one, unless you go through ER, but even then it might be tricky getting to see one on a regular basis.

Good luck, finding a good pdoc is really important. The last one I had, blew big time, real creepy and arrogant.

6 months? Why the hell does it take that long?
Anyway, I hope my new doctor doesn't force me to keep going to see the previous psychitrist. Will he ever listen...?

I think it takes that long because the Canadian health care system is right now in an extremely bad way. I have a friend who's been waiting for urology surgery for well over a year now and still can't even get a surgery date. The surgeon works 12-14 hours per day, practically every day, so it's not like there's anything he could do about it. Long waiting periods are part of the game here. Just to see a counsellor (his degree is in social work) through the health district here in Saskatchewan took about 3 months, and an appointment with a psychiatrist took about 5. By then I didn't even feel like I needed to see him anymore.

But anyway, I think if your new doctor is worth his salt, if you tell him you had a bad experience with the previous psychiatrist, he will try to refer you to a different one. In my experience, most doctors are pretty reasonable about that. After all, how much good will it do you to go to a pdoc you don't trust?

:)
