Sensitivities to medications- what is going on?

Posted by john1022 on February 11, 2004, at 12:51:16

I posted this a while back, but I just wanted to see if there was anyone else who might have any idea what might be going on with me.

I am currently extremely sensitive to antidepressants as well as magnesium supplements, fish oil, fish, multivitamins, potassium, 5htp and St. John's Wort.

All of these sensitivities started when my last bout of depression started. I was once able to take Effexor, 5htp, eat fish and take multivitamins with no problems. Effexor worked really well for my depression, but now it just makes me immediately extremely depressed when I take it. All of the rest that I mentioned all make me have extreme anxiety and depression after I take them and make me feel horrible.

My pdoc thinks I might be bipolar and I have been taking lithium orotate with a little bit of success, but it is not fixing the problem (not helping with my sleep problems and depression that much). But this seems to be the same thing I had going on in the past, some kind of chemical imbalance, that was easily fixed by Effexor within a few weeks of taking it.

I am somehow able to tolerate it though along with Taurine, Zinc and B6 supplements.

So why can I take something like lithium or zinc, but I cannot tolerate magnesium? I did have hair tests and adrenal tests done. My copper came back high and I also had high levels of cortisol in the morning and afternoon and low DHEA levels.

My doctor thinks it might be the copper causing the sensitivities, so we are working on lowering my levels of that. But so far I am still extremely sensitive to these things. Any ideas? your feedback is appreciated. Thanks

I forgot to add that some of the other reactions I have been having to even the zinc, taurine and lithium which I can tolerate are blurred vision and different muscles twitch occasionally and sometimes my joints in my ankles and wrists get achy and feel like I have slight carpel tunnel syndrome. I have also been having more vivid dreams and occasional nightmares which I have never had in the past.

I have a feeling this may be moved to the "psycho-babble alternative" forum. anyhow, high copper could very well be the problem, and here are some good supplements for combating this:

folic acid (up to 800mcg)
zinc (25-75mg)
manganese (10mg)
vitamin B3 (niacin)
vitamin B6 (also the p-5-p form)
vitamin C and E (d-alpha & gamma)
selenium

i see you are already taking a couple of these..
