Lithium Therapeutic Dosage

Posted by Flipsactown on February 10, 2004, at 18:42:37

I have been on lithium for 30 days. Does anybody know through personal experience the time period when lithium reaches its therapeutic dose? I am beginning to get discouraged that lithium will effectively augment my current cocktail of lamictal, prozac and remeron. My current cocktail poops out in the late afternoon and my depression returns.

When i was put on lithium (approx. 18 yrs. ago)
it was 900mg; maybe 600mg and then raised
soon after. It was the only drug i was started
on (benzos later). It worked very well within
a week. Maybe your dose is different or it
just takes longer for some people IF it is the
right drug for them.

Hi Flips,
My pdoc just added lithobid to my cocktail of Effexor and Topamax, and for some reason, I'm just so nervous to start taking it. I'm still not getting much relief from my mixed states (still feeling quite depressed and/or hyped up/irritated)with the above two meds, so he's adding the lithium.

How are the side effects of lithium for you, if you have any at all? Thanks.

Sooshi,
I have had no side effects other then being constantly thirsty which is more of an inconvenience because of the many bathroom trips. Tomorrow, I go for my second blood level test and if need be, will probably increase lithium from 900mg to 1200mg, if blood level proves I have yet to reach the therapeutic dosage. I am crossing my fingers that lithium is the magic bullet of my cocktail that will give me depression relief throughout the day and night.

Thanks for your response. Glad to hear your're not having any of the nausea, shakiness and such, which I guess is what I am fearing....

Good luck with your Li levels. I hope Li turns out to be your "magic bullet" too, as I am looking for the same thing!!
