Xanax Withdrawal Question

Posted by nubchai on January 25, 2004, at 11:54:48

Hi There. I've been self-medicating with Xanax for 2 years. (Stupid I know. There was a death in my family and a lot of work stress). The dosage was relatively small. I took 1 mg. pills and cut them down. During work days I would take what amounted to maybe 1/8 of a tab or less. It helped anxiety i felt. I rarely would use Xanax on weekends or vacations

So 2 weeks ago I decided to wean myself off. I reduced what I was taking to about 1/16 of a tab. (I know this may sound absurd)

Here are my symptoms: muscle ache, back ache, headache, light headedness, more acute hearing, more acute sense of taste, more acute sensory perception in general, anxiety, gas. Also sometimes I have the weird feeling that I can't walk right (like I don't have a sense that my feet are hitting the ground). Other times I feel almost normal.

Here are my questions:

1. Is gas a normal withdrawl symptom?
2. Aside from using other drugs is there anything I can do to help my bidy and brain heal more quickly from this experience?
3. Are there any teas, herbs etc that might help.

Thanks for your help.
Nub

Hi,
I stopped Xanax once for a couple of months with no problems. I never took more than .5 a day. You take a lot less. You made need to stay on your normal dose and then go down to half of that dose for one day and go back to your normal dose. I've seen reports where it takes some people a couple of months to get off Xanax, so don't push yourself. Most symptoms could be the withdrawl; we are all different and this is how your body is reacting. I would also drink a lot of water. Good luck, and please take your time.

Joy,

Thanks. I definitely plan to take a weaning approach. I thought I was emotionally addicted to the xanax but found quickly it was a physical addiction. Some of the symptoms really surprised me though. I figured with my low dosage I could just stop. Not the case. But I learned my lesson :)
