Any one take Risperdal as a mood stablizer?

Posted by Mother of 5 on January 23, 2004, at 8:11:36

My main med. is Lexapro 20 mg. The Dr. has me on 1.5 mg. of Risperdal to stablized my moods and supplement the Lexapro to help with depression. I have gained 50 lbs and am experiencing brain fog. Tell me about your experience. Thanks.

I have been on both medications. I had to discontinue the Lexapro due to brain fog. I am now on Prozac. The Risperdal I could not tolerate because I would get extreme anxiety between doses and i couldn't stand it. It seems like the Lexapro may be the culprit as far as the brain fog goes. I've heard alot of people experience that on that med for some reason. -Stacey (crazy mother of 2)

Stacey,

Can you describe the "brain fog" you experienced on lex. I think I might have a similar problem and could really use the info. Also, how long were you on lex before switching to Prozac?

I was on Prozac for 2-3 years and loved it. My mood was wonderful and I found it gave me some extra energy. It improved my attention span too! I hope you have had positive results on Prozac.

Hi K,

I have a long history with Prozac although I've been on many different anti-depressants, I seem to always end up going back to it. I tried the Lexapro last year on my Pdoc's advice. I am bipolarII and was a bit stimulated on the Prozac (also currently take Lamictal) I was looking for a calmer AD at that time. I liked it initially, but after about 3-4 months I started developing this terrible "brain fog" like I was thinking through a cloud. It was very hard to concentrate and I even felt confused. I finally came to the conclusion that it was the Lexapro causing this (though my doctor was not convinced) I decided to switch to Prozac. I still have other problems regarding my swinging moods but no more brain fog. For me, the Lexapro was the culprit.

Thank you, Stacey! I'm having a bit of trouble with confusion and concentration after 35 days on 10 mg lexapro. I really hope this is temporary because it's a little scary. It's good to hear that someone else was having difficulties similar to mine.

You mentioned you're still having trouble with mood swings. If you haven't already tried it, you might look in to Risperdal. I've heard it's good as a mood stabilizer.

Thanks again!

K.

Thanks for the info concerning brain fog and Lexapro. I'm on 20 mg of it and feel the fog. Since I'm on Risperdal I thought it was the Risperdal. Last week I feel down the stairs and was so focused on taking Ibuprofen that I forgot to take the Risperdal that night. My mind was as clear as can be. I was still on Lexapro. No change there. I think it's the Risperdal. What do you think?

Hi Mother of 5,

I think I might have told you this already, so I appologize if I'm repeating myself. When I began on lex my pdoc prescribed .25 mg of Risperdal. After one day I felt very confused and disoriented, so I didn't take it again thinking the Risperdal was the problem. Now, 35 days later the confusion has returned with a horrible inability to concentrate on anything. So I blame the lex.

Although, in your case it might be the Risperdal that's causing problems. It certainly sounds that way given what you describe. Maybe you should taper off the Risperdal to see if that helps. (Of course, check with your pdoc first.) I hope that's what clears the fog for you.

Thanks for the info. I have thought about tapering off the Risperdal but the reason it is at 1.5 mg is because I was so unstable. At least the depression is gone. I might have to live with the dulling aspect of the Risperdal for the time being. Sigh... I would like to go back to work one day.

Hi again. There might be something other than Risperdal to help stabilize your mood. Check with your pdoc. I hope you get yourself healthy so you can go back to work.
