off all benzo's--anxiety is awful --HELP

Posted by Mandybella on January 20, 2004, at 18:25:57

I was taken off my klonopin that I had taken 1mg bid for 4 years for depression and anxiety. This happened when I went into treatment center for ambien addiction. I guess I need to be off all these type of meds because I have stimulated my 'addiction gene'.
But my depression and anxiety are back full blown because I am home again and all the stressors are back. I am on Wellbutrin XL 300mg and Lexapro 20mg in am, Lamictal 100mg in am and pm and Remeron 30mg at bedtime. The remeron seems to help the sleep. But none of these help anxiety. He told me I could take Seroquel 50mg as needed but it does nothing and I hate taking an antipsychotic. I thought I would do great when I was in the hospital, but being in the real world is totally another story.
My suicidal thoughts are coming back and I am afraid. I do not see new psych until end of Feb.
Any ideas that I could suggest to doctor who treated me in hospital?? I feel like I am in a worse place than I went in but I do not want to go back to using harmful stuff.

Mandybella,

I don't know how much insight I can offer, but I can't take benzos for my anxiety either and I know how difficult it is. I am bipolar 1 and I absolutely need to be on an antipsychotic (currently Geodon) and that helps a lot.

I have heard about BuSpar, which is a non-benzo (and non addictive) that supposedly helps with anxiety. I think it takes 2 weeks or so to kick in. You may want to ask around and see how it has worked for people.

In the interim, your best bet might be the seroquel. I don't know how high a dosage you can go to on that.

Best wishes,

Girl

Were you taken off the benzo cold turkey (without any gradual withdrawal)? If so, it's possible that that might have triggered your anxiety. If so, then I would suggest that you try to get the doctor to agree to having you go back on your original dose of the benzo and then start a very gradual reduction.

Mandy....

I have a pretty good idea of how rotten you feel, and I'm sorry....

Instead of the words 'antipsychotic' think 'major tranquilizer', which is another name for the antipsychotics! If the seroquel doesn't work, maybe another 'major tranquilizer' will.
