~~DOES RETIN-A like ACCUTANE cause Depression ~~

Posted by dreaman on January 16, 2004, at 19:13:58

Could the RETIN-A I have taken for almost 4 (for acne) have caused my depression/ADD(inattentive)/social-anxiety. I would say over the last few years my depression has gone from non-existenxt to absolutely crippiling. I have basically become a total hermit, not calling back friends and staying in bed most of the day. I can sleep for 14 hours a day if allowed. The reason why I have only reciently become aware that Retin-a might be causing my problems is its similarity to Accutane which is associated with suicidal depression. Is accutane/retin-a also associated with cognitive problems like brain fog and short term memory problems? Also digestive problems and irratable bowl?

Has anyone also had similar symptoms after taking Retin-a or Accutane? After stopping the medication did these symptoms go away? How long did it take to get better?

Does anyone know of any good soures where I could learn more about the specific effects of accutane and or Retin-a on the brain. Specifically how neurochemically accutane/Retin-a/high dose vitamin A induces depression, such as decreasing Serotonin or Dopamine or causing brain inflammation/neuronal death. Have their been any scientific studies. How similar is this medication induced depression to normal depression. Would it help to get on somekind of Depression Med or not?

I would really really appreciate any info anyone could give me!!! I

A friend of mine took accutane for about 6 months? and she suffers from depression but was doing well on her meds. She took the accutane knowing that it would cause and DID cause depression, but she felt it was worth it at the time. Sorry I can't be of more help as I was not the person who took this drug. I do believe that she was fine after stopping the accutane(her depression went away again).

Take care.

I've taken many courses of it and it's never caused depression; however, I do have Major Depressive Disorder and take an antidepressant, so maybe that stops the acne drug from making be depressed.
