Effexor and Pregnancy

Posted by Zee on January 14, 2004, at 13:24:35

I just started taking Effexor 75mg. a day for mood swings and so far I have no complaints. I feel alot better and I even lost a few pounds which I like. I'm just worried though because my husband and I want to have more children but I'm afraid of any damage to the fetus and/or baby with me being on Effexor. How long can you go on taking this medication? Any thoughts?

I think I should have stayed on my AD when I was pregnant because I suffered poop-out when I started the drug afterwards. I was taking a tricyclic, however, and these drugs have been around much longer than Effexor, so there is more info. about potential problems.

The New York Times ran a long article about ADs and pregnancy on Tuesday. Here's a link:

"Dealing With Depression and the Perils of Pregnancy"
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/13/health/psychology/13DEPR.html

The link may not work if you are not registered w/ the Times. Registration is free, though.

The article mentions a service called MotherRisk. Here's a link to its website:

I am a mother.
Why on earth would you even consider having a child, if your mood is unstable????????
My suggestion is to first stabilize your mood. Have a child when you will be able to care for him in the best way you can. Why risk side effects of medication on an unborn baby? Many may say it is OK, however, no studies can be done on pregnant women. My child is "perfect". Many others on this board or otherwise may say their child is "perfect". Untill the child is grown completley, noone will ever really know.
Why even risk it?????
Best Wishes,
Cindy

Hi Cindy, you're probably right. I'm just so frustrated you know. I was perfectly fine before I had children, after my second child was born I just lost it. I don't know why, I'm not depressed or anything, I'm just always irratable and moody. My doctor put me on Celexa last year and after 10 months I weaned myself off because I was scared and I thought that I'd be OK and plus like I said we want to have more children. But after a few months I started getting moody again and she put me on Effexor 2 weeks ago and I feel more calm now. But this is so frustating because it's interfering with my life plans you know. How long am I supposed to take this stuff and will I have to take them forever? My husband has OCD as well and he's been on Prozac for years and is now trying Effexor so I guees we'll see how it goes. Thanks!

Life is not all roses. Anyhow, There are alternitives to meds.

Check out the Psycho-Babble Alternitive Board.

Im not sure about the fish oil thing, But I definately think its worth a try. Studies have been done, apparentlly effective for mood stabilization. + the omega~3 is great for a developing fetus!!!! Wonderfull for their developing brain!!!

I just started with omega oils fish and flax and Borage. Ive been a vegitarian for 12 years. I need to get better and am willing to try anything i need to, to be well. It is sooo hard for me to take fish oil and eat meat (Gag with every bite, and every burp~YUCK) . My Pdoc says I need more protien. However I have no appetite. So, The easiest way for me to get protien is with animal products. I dont need to consume as much. I was wastin away. Im finally up to 113#s.
