It is true that you may have bipolar, however sometimes, because of the rollercoaster of medications that a person has been on, (in addition to the activating effects of some medications) they may believe they have bipolar disorder.
For instance, I don't really have bipolar disorder but, I find that lithium is one of the only antidepressants (mood stabalizer) that I can tolerate.
For instance, both remeron and effexor made me very angry and irritable. Celexa works well however I can't get to therapudic doses because of the effect on my sleep.
Anyhow, if you do want to try lithium, it is a bit of a downer, but it also has some significant antidepressant properties. Antianxiety, antiagitation, antiagression. It does have the ability to raise serotonin.
I presume you have tried the SSRI's (for some people the norepinephrine medications can be very activating.
But, you know yourself better than anyone else. Lithium is worth a shot. By preventing the highs, one doesn't crash very easily.

I think I have corresponded with you previously, I recognize the name. You seem to be very knowledgable about Lithium. I am thinking about giving it another go. Cannot stand Depakote or Lamictal, they tend to stabilize me but in a very dysthymic state. I am Bipolar II and mostly have problems with recurrent, major depressive (agitated/psychotic) episodes interspersed with some hypomanias. I tried Lithium a few months ago and thought that it felt rough on my system and I felt a bit emotionally blunted. Perhaps this is because I started off at 300 mgs.? I know this is a low dose but is it possible that one would need to taper up on Lithium very slowly to be more comfortable? Perhaps cutting the tablet into small pieces and starting this way, a small amount each day? Any advice?

Yes it is possible that slowly tapering up would help the situation. As well, many people notice that the antidepressant effect somewhat later than the antimanic effect.
It takes long term (around 1 month) treatment with lithium untill it increases BDNF expression (a neurotrophin that has antidepressant properties)
Of course not anybody does well on lithium. But it certainly does things that other mood stabalizers don't do.
Another thing, is that exercise and lithium go well together. Vigious exercise plus lithium raised BDNF well above baseline.
Best of Luck

Linkdage, you bring up SUCH an important point about tons of meds and the misdiagnosis of bipolar. I think this happens more often than not. I am always surprised to read on this board how quickly people jump from med to med without getting the first one out of their system.
CrazyChic, maybe it is a good thing that you have to wait before trying another med. Also, I would suggest starting a mood chart for both you and your doctor. There are a few ready made mood charts available. Just type in "mood chart" in google and you will come up with several. It sounds like you are rapid cycling right now so a mood would be really beneficial.
This site: http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/frameset.html
has a great explanation of the different types of bipolar.

This site is an excellent article on the "The Psychopharmacology of Bipolar Disorder" and it classifies several meds and explains the success rate and how they work.I hope this helps.
