effexor-mood swings

Posted by ccg on January 1, 2004, at 16:45:37

I've been on effexor (300mg/day) for 4 years and do pretty well, except for mood swings and bouts of isolation once or twice a month. They tend to clear up in a day or two, but wondering if anyone else has had this problem.. Also, occasionally when I'm functioning well, I tend to forget if I've taken my dosage or not. If I forget and don't take it, I hit bottom really hard a day or two later. Severe depression, worse than the symptoms I sought help for in the first place... feel totally out of control, hopeless, uncontrolable crying, and suicidal. They tend to go away after I resume the effexor and calm down with xanex. (a med I try to take only when absolutely necessary). When I spoke to my doctor, he wanted to up the effexor another 75 mg a day, but I'm very hesitant to do this...300mg seems awfully high already. I'd welcome any input from others on these issues. Also, anyone having urinary problems on effexor? I don't know if it is related or not. Thanks for any input!

I too was on Effexor and got off of it twice.
I also had mood swings: for two weeks I would feel at least "numb" that is to say, not being so deep in a hole of depression as I was without Effexor. But then things would go bad for a week or so and so on and on... So I decided to switch off the effexor (I was taking it in a range 75-225mg, mostly at 75mg for short periods even at 225mg without better result). I had some side-effect but not to severe. After few days od redrawal I actualy felt much much better for about two weeks and then - wham, full scaled depression back. Ithen tempered with some other drugs with no success and then come back to Effexor (better some relief then none). But now I am on a benzo Xanax (2mg daily) which acts on me similar (for some days better) than Effexor,
but it is said to be addictive and I to seem to notice that it works best at short period when the dosage is increased. So I started also with tianeptine (Coaxil) few days ago and any benefit from it is still to manifest if it is to be.
(As your horrible effects concerned, I noticed similar when I forgot to take it for a day or two, especially when at higher dose, in your case perhaps the response is so much more intense because off a long period of time, that you are taking this drug. I took it the longest for 6 months. That is just my amateur opinion as is the next: I don't consider it a smart move to even increase the dosage.)

Good luck!
