Coming off Remeron

Posted by Jen on May 1, 2000, at 15:11:46

I've decided to come off Remeron due to the weight gain and also
because it was making me feel worse than when I wasn't on it. I've tapered (this is my first nigh)
from 30 down to 15mgs and will stay on that for a weeek then go down to 7.5 for a week. I've only been
on it for a month and have gained 7lbs! Please tell me that this stuff isn't as bad as Effexor to get off!!
Does anyone else have 'coming off' experiences to share?? Thanks!

Hi Jen,

I stopped it all at once with no ill side effects. Tapering is still good (over days, not weeks necessarily), but NOTHING like Effexor, at least for me.

Jen,
I've been on and off (and on again) Remeron 3 times in the last year and have had no withdrawals whatsoever. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen though. I can relate to the weight gain, 24 lbs in 2 months! Let us know how it goes with you.

Peace,
Greg

I've been on and off Remeron several times. I keep coming back to it as I realize it is a helpful ingredient in my cocktail in terms of treating depression, insomnia, and tinnitus. I don't realize until I've quit how it was actually helping.

During the times I did quit, the main problem I experienced was heartburn and lack of appetite. This lasted perhaps 4 days to a week. If you have been accustomed to having Remeron help with sleep, then you may have a hard time falling asleep. That's a possibility. I always had another sedating drug onhand to replace it, so this wasn't too much of an issue with me. Though I have to admit, sleep on Remeron was better than sleep with anything else.

Since Remeron has been somewhat helpful to me, but not helpful to you, then it certainly makes sense to discontinue and look elsewhere. I would guess in advance the withdrawal side effects should be mild compared to something like Effexor or Paxil, but that the main symptom you may notice will be stomach-related...heartburn, lack of appetite, maybe very slight nausea, something like that. Remeron affects--among other things--5Ht3 receptors, which are located in the gut according to some literature I was reading. That's why the increased appetite, weight gain, and then subsequent reversal of these when discontinuing.

I'm sure you'll keep feeling better. I had Remeron withdrawl after only taking one dose. Try to exercise and drink lots of water, and eat good food.

Hi, I'm going off Remeron b/c of weight gain, and I will be starting cymbalta. Doc wants me to taper of Remeron, I take 60 mg a day so doc's advice is going down to 30 mg a day for a week and then 15 for a week and THEN starting Cymbalta. I don't want to wait and would rather quit cold turkey and start the cymbalta, but I don't want to do anything drastic. Any advice?
