Lexapro and Weight

Posted by Chasemom on December 29, 2003, at 14:18:12

Hi all, I was on Paxil for 2 years and I truly truly believe it saved my life as a SAHM of 4 kids, now under the age of 8 incl 3 yr old twins, i was a better person-unfortunately I became a fatter person-20 pds more, I didn't even see it ocming I had no other side effects. After much deliberation I went off it in August and have been regrettin it since. I have lost 10 pounds, and my Dr has said to try Lexapro that maybe the weight gain would not happen, but after reading the boards I have to say I am somewhat discouraged--any advice would be great--thanks Chris

I've been on 10 mg of Lex for 10 days now and it has killed my appetite. I've lost 5 pounds! Keep in mind that it effects everyone differently, but many of the posts I've read say they eat significantly less on Lex.

Soon after I got back onto Lexapro, my appetite diminished a lot, b/c my carb cravings were under control...so I think I've been losing weight since I've been eating less...

I have gained over 100 pounds in the last eight years on antidepressants. I wouldn't say that the weight gain was completely due to the medicine, but it no doubt played a major role. About a month ago my doctor switched me to Lexapro. I have more energy now than I have had in the past eight years, and I also have considerably less of an appetitite now. I haven't weighed myself to confirm a weight loss, but my clothes are fitting a little looser. Even if I didn't lose weight because of Lexapro, I am glad I made the switch just because of how good I feel right now. Everyone's experiences are different, of course, and I wish you well.

Simus, this is a little off topic but I'm curious: How long did you take lex before you noticed a significant change in your mood? (It's great to hear you're feeling good.) I've been on 10 mg for almost two weeks and have seen no improvement, i'd like to know how long to wait it out.

I have taken SSRIs for over 8 years. Effexor just didn't seem to be effective anymore, so the doctor decided to transition me to Lexapro. I had a full 300mg of Effexor in my blood stream when I started taking Lexapro (10mg). So I cannot be compared to someone just starting with Lexapro as the first SSRI. But I felt great the next day. When I dropped to 150mg of Effexor and stayed at 10mg of Lexapro I still felt good. But at 75mg of Effexor and 10mg of Lexapro I started diving into depression again. So the doctor upped the Effexor to 112.5mg and 20mg Lexapro. I felt great again within 24 hours. In another 3 weeks I will drop down to 75mg Effexor, and continue decreasing gradually until I am only on Lexapro. Like I said, I am not the typical situation. But I can say that I have been on several other SSRIs, and I haven't noticed this drastic of an improvement this quickly during any other transition. I hope this helps. Best of luck!

I started @5mg, went to 10mg 5th week. Lex did not feel like it was working for me until week 9. Literature says 6-8 weeks. Some posters have reported results almost immediately....it depends on how your body reacts.

Good luck and hang in there, 2 weeks is really not enough time to know for sure.~~~8|8
