Posted by Tepiaca on December 26, 2003, at 13:28:55

Hi can you tell me wich medicine are safe to take when you are suffering from a cold ,high temperature , nasal congestion

Im worried because I dont know wich medicines I could take while on a MAOI drug

What would happen if I take something dangerous?
My BP is going to increase like if I would eat high tyramine food?

Thankyou very much

Hi there. Well, tylenol is safe for the fever. Nasal sprays are also safe to take with an MAOI. Rubbing Tiger Balm or Vicks on your nose and sinus areas is also safe.

What ISN't safe is anything with a decongestant it in because that is what raises the BP. I don't know where you live but in the U.S. there is a cold med called Corti .. something (i'm in canada) and they have one for people who suffer form high blood pressure.

And chicken soup is safe! LOL!

Take care.

Maxime.

Sorry to hear about your cold. That's definitely a dilemma for MAOI users. I take Claritin, an over the counter antihistamine. That helps me with general allergies. Before I went on Nardil, I used to take Claritin-D, which also contained the decongestant pseudoephedrine. That's a big no-no. From what I have read, any decongestant you take (perhaps other than nasal sprays) would risk having a hypertensive crisis. You certainly don't need that in addition to being sick!

And be careful with chicken soup! Many in the stores contain that lovely and ubiquitous yeast extract. They may also be made with chicken stock and/or bouillion. I have found stuff in the organic section that seems safer.

Take care!

As the others said, you cannot take anything with a decongestant in it, so read labels carefully. Plain antihistimines, like Claritin and Benedryl are ok and if you have a cough, you can take Robitussin plain. For fever, aspirin, tylenol and ibuprofin are all fine too. Hot showers or baths are soothing and can somewhat help congetstion. Hope you feel better soon! Melodie

Hey there. You can only take ORIGINAL tylenol, none of the ones that are for colds. Regular tylenol does not have pseudonephrine in it.

In the past two days I have developed a bad cold myself. Really sore throat and body aches and congestion.

I took a chance and had some Neo Citron which has all the things ONE SHOULDN'T take if on an MAOI. But it had no effect on me except made me feel better. Guess I am just lucky. :)

My Nardil cold/flu remedies:
It's tough for us MAOi folks because of all the drug interactions with most cold/flu medicines, so here is what I have come up with.
stuffy nose: Dristan/Affrin/whatever nasal spray is what I use. I think this stuff is okay, but to be super safe, you might want to stick with Vicks or other menthol products, and/or natural remedies like steam.
Also, don't know if they make this anymore, but a prescription decongestant called Seldane is safe for MAOi users, and works well. Ask your pdoc!
cough: chloroseptic throat spray actually helps a bit by numbing the throat! also great for sore throats. Lozenges also help.
headache/fever/body aches: advil (ibuprofen)or aspirin
echinacea or other herbal teas
zinc lozenges
lots of orange juice, soup, and crackers!
tons of sleep :)

Pseudoephedrine causes nasty mixed manic depressive symptoms in bipolar spectrum types. I took it a few months ago and had an episode--irritability, racing anxious and uncomfortable thoughts, insomnia, heart racing, couldn't breathe, panic, etc. I guess you just have to watch out for whether your mood takes a turn for worse, since it might also affect anxious and panic disorder people. I am taking a small amount of tramadol with selegiline. I hope that it is ok. I did ask the group but no one responded.

My understanding of pseudoephedrine with MAOI's is that causes a dramatic increase in blood pressure. This has been known to lead to strokes. It's definitely one thing on the No-no list I would not mess with, personally.
