Klonopin boosts motivation?

Posted by btnd on December 11, 2003, at 7:01:57

Lately I've done some experiments, and it seems as 2-3mg of K boosts my motivation quite efficiently. I've tried Valium,Xanax but no other benzo does that. Strange.. Does anyone have the same exp.?

I've found that Klonopin is very dangerous for me. It was too FUN! Motivation was certainly boosted....but I had so much energy that I could do 50 projects at once to make countless phone calls. I was working my way towards addiction.

Even though Klonopin helped me overcome my fear of people, it was not in a way that was healthy for me. Even though I sincerely enjoyed it (LOL!!), I will never touch it again. But, yes, it boosts motivation. *smile*

I'm very low dose and haven't found increased motivation, specificly speaking..... However, paralyzing anxiety being treated certainly makes me more "able" to accomplish things.

The factor of do I have an overwhelming desire to "do things" ???? --- well, mostly, No.

Klonopin has never given me the "Wow, this stuff is great" feeling, for which I am grateful, actually. Meds that do that scare me a bit as there's too much room for running into problems with them, in my opinion. Klonopin effectively treats my anxiety and that makes me feel "normal" and functional.

My tendency is be lazy, at times, is still there. It's OK - it's just a part of who I am.

Just curious, how can a central nervous system depressant motivate someone?

By removing your anxiety/inhibitions.

disinhibition (inhibition of inhibitory neurons) + it has an affinity for serotonin receptors

theo,

Almost all benzo patient inserts have something about an effect of "paradoxical reaction".

Ask your pharmacist for the inserts to read or look 'em up in the PDR at the library.

A couple of examples from RxList(©RxList.com):

Valium® (diazepam) "Paradoxical reactions such as acute hyperexcited states, anxiety, hallucinations, increased muscle spasticity, insomnia, rage, sleep disturbances and stimulation have been reported..."

Klonopin® (clonazepam) "The following paradoxical reactions have been observed: Excitability, irritability, aggressive behavior, agitation, nervousness, hostility, anxiety, sleep disturbances, nightmares, and vivid dreams."

Restoril® (temazepam) "...paradoxical reactions including restlessness, overstimulation and agitation were rare (less than 0.5%)."

Xanax® (alprazolam) "...paradoxical reactions such as stimulation, increased muscle spasticity, sleep disturbances, hallucinations, and other adverse behavioral effects such as agitation, rage, irritability, and aggressive or hostile behavior have been reported rarely."

Even using the google search function on this site with "paradoxical reaction" as the search term will provide numerous personal examples of how CNS depressants can and do amp up some people.

Klonopin certainly boosted my motivation, by reducing anxiety and excessive worry and allowing me to get on with my life. My "baseline" state is enthusiastic/optimistic, except when anxiety, panic, and the resulting depression get in the way. This is unpredictable without medication and can totally derail me.

Klonopin (clonazepam) has absolutely no euphoric effect for me, and I don't even notice it (although it made me a bit tired for the first week or two).

I think it comes down to the primary cause of the problem: "pure" melancholic depression (for which Klonopin may not be so great) versus depression that results from anxiety (my situation). These hardly are psychiatric categories, and I'm sure the truth is much more complex, but I do think that when it comes to depression and anxiety this basic distinction is meaningful.

Nope, quite the opposite for me. (nm) » btnd
