Hi everyone,
I suffer from obsessive thoughts and corresponding anxiety and mild depression.
I am currently taking 225 mg effexor and about 1 mg day of clonazpam and have tried 1 mg xanax a day as well, when not taking the clonazpam. I have been on these meds for 4 months at these doses.
During previous episodes of similar anxiety and depression I was able to feel "like myself" and achieve full remission without prolonged use of xanax or clonazpan and just the SSRI or Effexor at a much lower dose.
During this episode, I have been unable to stop the clonazapam as I still have anxiety symptoms despite the partial beneficial response from the Effexor. As well, I still have depressive symptoms fairly frequently.
My pdoc suggested augmenting the effexor with 30 mg of remeron. I am tired as it is but will do whatever is necessary to relieve this lingering anxiety.
Does this strategy make sense?
Any thoughts and suggestions are greatly appreciated from those who have had ruminitave thoughts about low risk health concerns or other issues and have found a successful remedy or who have experience or thoughts about the Effexor-Remeron combo.
Best wishes to all.

Do a search on "california rocket fuel", that is what that combo is generally referred to as.

Why not go up on the Effexor first--to 300, 375, or 450, rather than adding another drug?

I agree with the other responses. Your options are:
1) increase the Effexor first and see how that goes
2) go with the "California rocket fuel". I have also heard that term. I do know that Remeron and Effexor are a very common combination. A close friend of mine's wife is on that combo.

I was up to 600 mg Effexor + Lithium and felt nothing. When I tried Remeron 60 mg + Effexor 375 + Lithium. I got a new life!
They have different working mechanisms which complete each ones. Not only that, both of them work on noradrelanine+ serotonin systems.Huggave

Remeron with Effexor is a good combo, and it doesn't keep you groggy during the day when the Remeron is taken at bedtime. I was also given clonazepam (Klonopin) and Prozac with this combo and found both helpful. The klonopin helped with the mild anxiety created by the high dose Effexor and the Prozac helped boost the antidepressant effects of Remeron and Effexor.
It is the best combo I've been on.
