Tapering Paxil (Yawn)

Posted by Civ on December 4, 2003, at 16:07:43

I am disgusted with Paxil CR. This is the third time I've *safely* tried to taper off this drug and I still feel the side effects. I don't even want to get into the first experience when a clueless doctor had me stop it cold turkey.

Curretly, I'm switching off dosages:

25, 12.5, 25, 12.5, etc.,

If you have experience in coming off Paxil, how did you do it? My method or something different? My pdoc wanted me to take 5 g of Lexapro to ease withdrawal symptoms, but I would like to avoid taking Lex. I think it was mentioned above that Prozac is used to ease withdrawal. The rationale is that Prozac can be stopped relatively easily, correct?

I've never heard of the switching...not sure what that's supposed to do...sounds like it would confuse the body more than anything. The most common way to get off Paxil is to taper down, over a week or more. I've been off and on it before many times. Each time I dropped from 20 mg to 10 for a week, then down to 5 for a week, then off. Worse I experienced was mild "zaps" and a slight case of uber-bitchness. :) Neither lasted long.

I'm coming off it now, from 30 mg, but I'm also starting Effexor XR and Topamax so those are counter-balancing any effects from coming off the Paxil. My drop off from the Paxil this time is much shorter, this time just 3 days. 30 to 20 to 10 to 0.

The main thing is, don't rush to get off of it...take it slow...a lot of people have a bad time coming off Paxil, you don't want to be one.

I don't know why docs suggest this daft switching. I agree with a previous poster it can surely only confuse body and brain.
My tip, get the liquid form and go down mg by mg, leave at least a few days between each drop and right at the last few mg , if it is troublesome one can add a low dose of prozac as it is virtually self tapering!
Of course you can also get liquid prozac!
Now I wonder why those nice drug companies made the liquids?!
