TRILEPTAL--doc wants me to start??!!!

Posted by Karalyn on December 5, 2003, at 13:55:34

is anyone else taking Trileptal? have you even heard of it? doc said its mostly for people who have seizures but that it will help even out my moods. He wants me to take with along with my Lexapro. He said it makes birth control innecfective and if he was a woman and got pregnant on it he would have an abortion. How is this supposed to help me and make me feel better? I dont want kids now, but to know that it will make my birth control innecfective. I hate how pdocs can overwhelm you when you are there and you just go along with everything in a haze and then later realize after you have left that he doesnt make sense and you are scared and confused. someone tell me what to do??? my fiance thinks that maybe i dont need another med. and is concerned that I will be taking another one especially since this affects my birth control then it affects him and our sex life. ahhhh. I need answers.

I have been on Trileptal for about 9 months. It was added to other meds to deal with mood swings. I have found it moderately effective. But, I have found that it tends to "flat line" my emotions. By that I mean it reduced the deep, bad moods, but also tempered or deminished any significant level of "feeling good". Istill have mood swings, just not as much energy in them.

thanks so much for responding. yeah i was afraid of s/e's like that. I am already feeling tired on Lexapro and I dont want to lose energy. do you know if this is common or maybe one of those individual things that may affect you but not me? how many pills or milligrams are you taking? he wants me to build up to like 4 150mgs. if you dont mind me asking what exactly are you diagnosed with? I have depression and anxiety.
thanks so much.

I was able to rapidly titrate over days to 900mg without ill effect of any kind whatsoever except maybe a slight appetite increase in combination with 2.5mg of Lexapro. I find it's S/E profile relatively benign taking 300mg in the am and 600mg at bedtime. I can't say it has done any wonders, but I'm seeking mood stabilization and a reduction in cycling and or hypomania from the Lex.
