Amantadine

Posted by myclonic_jerk on December 2, 2003, at 12:18:00

Hi all,

Has anyone had any success in using Amantadine for adult ADD? This substance is used primarily to treat the early stages of Parkinson's, although it doubles as a treatment/preventive for influenza A virus.I'm curious.
I ask because my experience with this med. was that it greatly improved ADD symptoms, but unfortunately quickly worsened my depressive symptoms.
Also, has anyone been prescribed a stimulant (or other 'novel'and ingeniuosly cunning) med. for ADD. in the UK.Trying to get a stim. prescribed here is like trying to arrange a dinner date with Saddam.

The Jerk.

ps. can't get Wellbutrin for this purpose here either.

Do you have also depressive syntoms ? Maybe you have what Daniel Amen calls Limibic Adhd (you might want to have the subtype test at Amenclinic.com). For this subtype he suggests the "stimulating antidepressants medication, such as desipramine, imipramine, buprion and venlafaxine (if there cingular issues as well".
Have you have tried one of this ?

I have Adhd too and I live in Italy. I managed to get a stim prescribed asking to a psychiatrist expert in adhd, who studied in the USA. Maybe you could try to do something similar (look also for pediatrists and child neuropsychiatrists). Anyway if you have also depressive syntoms a stim alone may not be enough.

I managed to get Wellbutrin in Italy. Here it's commercialized with the name of Zyban as an aid to stop smoking. I looked on the google if there was a psychiatrist in my city who had written something about 'adult adhd' and he allowed me to try Zyban.

Best Wishes

Yes,I have so called recurrent major depression, co-morbid ADD- I'd long suspected I was ADD before I was given a formal diagnosis which confirmed this;I tried the noradrenergic TCA's first, on my own initiative.Venlafaxine made me 'manic' in a dysphoric sense. As I mentioned, Amantadine helped a great deal with focus and clarity of thought-shame about the minor issue of its inducing suicidal thoughts(a rare side effect referred to as part of side effect profile)!I'll check out Dr. Amens take on things when I get the chance.
By the way, I also take 350mg Lamictal, and 60mg Prozac, and have my depression pretty much under control.

I agree, I think I need to find a private consultant with a willingness to accept ADD as a seperate entity from inattentiveness caused by depression .I got sick of doctors taking the easy option and blaming severe inattentiveness(which persists even when the depression is in remission)on depression itself.

Thanks,

May it help now that you're on Lamictal ? I'm wondering because now I'm not on meds but my plan is to go on a mood stabilizer and only after trying to add some noradrenergic.

As I mentioned, Amantadine helped a great deal with focus and clarity of thought-shame about the minor issue of its inducing suicidal thoughts

you didn't to have to quit it for such a stupid side-effect ;-)

It didn't help but I tried it as a monotherapy. It made me aggressive and more distracted. I suppose my problem has nothing to do with Dopamine and very much with NE. Ritalin didn't make me aggressive but yes, more distracted.I quit it after few days. Anyway, everyone is different and so on ;-)
